I'm not claiming that the danger of outright intentional criminal use of #euthanasia #MAID is the biggest ethical and legal concern for use of advance requests. But it's remarkable that some are so gung-ho about MAID that they can't even imagine any need for additional safeguards

Striking that when in Canada @DementiaJustice proposes to at least have independent legal verification before implementing Advance Requests for #MAID, some advocates opine "it hinders access to MAID". Some frame access to MAID as an inherent need law360.ca/ca/articles/254094…

Forty years ago today, the Supreme Court of Canada decided the case of a young woman from Prince Edward Island. The trial judge called her Eve to protect her privacy. Her mother had asked for court permission to have Eve sterilized, and the case went all the way to Ottawa. 1/16

Canadians can’t afford rent. Food bank use is at a record high. Wages are stagnant while the rich are getting richer than ever before.
Of all the people who could use this kind of federal support right now, venture capitalists are at the bottom of that list.

Brilliant data and note even remotely surprised, ugh.
1/10 I’ve long assumed Parliament spends almost all its disability time on MAiD, so I tested it. I analyzed every House of Commons speech since the 2019 Truchon decision, 257,640 of them, and wrote my tests down before counting. MAiD leads, with about a third of that time.

MAiD’s share of House of Commons floor time on disability priorities: 33%. MAiD’s share of committee hours on disability bills and studies in both chambers: about 77%, estimated. NEW: An Ontario cancer patient is taking the Ford government to court for refusing to fund a U.S. treatment that could save her life.
"People are just being told to die."
The government pointed to cost savings as one of the reasons it is limiting which patients can receive funding for out-of-country treatments.

Framing the move as a cost-saving measure is not sitting right with Apitz-Grossman.
