Even more appalling is the reported celebration of civilian suffering by government sympathizers. I have repeatedly invoked the echoes of the sixteenth century, not because history repeats itself mechanically, but because the destruction of communities, religious heritage, and historical institutions raises profound questions about Ethiopia's civilizational future. The weapons have changed, from swords and spears to drones and modern artillery, but the human devastation remains. This is a battle over the soul of Ethiopia. The international community must examine the political decisions and structures sustaining these conflicts rather than treating each new catastrophe as an isolated event.
