400 people with lived experience of liver disease and 200 healthcare professionals have called for more research into how to live better for longer with cirrhosis as part of an extensive study. The results showed they want to see more work carried out on prevention, early diagnosis, improved treatment pathways and personalised treatment, better support in managing the condition, including effective diet and exercise programmes and mental health and wellbeing. ow.ly/Sc1z50Zv0yo

🗞️New research offers hopeful news for patients with advanced alcohol related liver disease. An international multicentre study led by @MedUni_Wien and published in @JHepatology shows that consistent alcohol abstinence can lead to a remarkable recovery, even in patients with previously decompensated alcohol related cirrhosis. The study analysed 633 patients from 17 specialised centres across Europe and Asia. Within five years, up to one third achieved “recompensation”, meaning complete regression of liver related complications together with recovery of liver function. Key findings • Even advanced cirrhosis is not always irreversible • Early and sustained alcohol abstinence more than doubles the chance of recovery • Patients who recompensated and maintained abstinence had no liver related deaths in the study • Risks of liver cancer and overall mortality were significantly reduced These findings highlight the powerful impact of early intervention and long term support for alcohol abstinence. Strengthening addiction support programmes is therefore not only a public health priority, but also essential for improving outcomes in patients with alcohol related liver disease. 👉Read the full study: journal-of-hepatology.eu/art…

📢 🚨This is *big news* for anyone involved in #clinicaltrials for #liver disease… Winning the #FGCup is a great start to improving outcomes for patients - improved trial designs and better implementation. Big opportunities ahead! #livertwitter @LiverTrust @BASLedu @uk_torch
The #FGCup is over and what a show it was! Congratulations to the authors of "From O'Shaughnessy to opportunity: innovating hepatology trials in the UK" for beating away the competition and emerging victorious! On a serious note, the engagement and difficulty in predicting the winner is a real testament to the quality of papers we publish in #FG! Perhaps you have a paper you want to write or a review to publish? You never know - you might be the next winner! @OTavabie @Yvanne33163579 @drdina_mansour @ChrisMysko @Laurak1982 @jamesbmaurice @DrAnkurSriv @abhichauhan @tomjohnston84 @hoganbrianj @drgautammehta @ajcook @DrGordonHay @Harr_Ferguson @RajivJalan1 @JulieLiverTrust @sheiybani @dr_aditi_kumar @DrJMKennedy @DunnePdj

Fantastic competition with excellent papers but delighted to see our paper win - @UK_CLIF aims to provide a platform to deliver trials that are accessible to patients and HCPs to develop interventions that improve decompensated cirrhosis outcomes fg.bmj.com/content/15/5/395
