The UK Fireball Alliance aims to recover freshly-fallen meteorites in the UK, and is a collaboration between the UK’s six meteor camera networks - @FireballsUK, @SCAMP_Meteors, @UKMeteorNetwork, @nemetodemeteor, @meteordoc and allsky7.net
Stunning images of the recent aurora events captured by our #fireball cameras at @EarthSolarSystem @RHULEarthSci, processed by @ardsmedley
@SCAMP_Meteors & @UK_Fireball cameras monitor the sky, helping us to learn about the formation of the Solar System and recover #meteorites
Last night's #meteorite fall in England, as seen from two cameras in Ben Stanley's #AllSky7 #fireball system in Nuneaton. We know more-or-less where this rock landed, but it doesn't meet out search criteria so Plan B is being hatched.
Did you see the big #fireball at 8:20pm tonight? This video is from Nick James in Chemsford. The #meteor may have dropped a #meteorite, and your report could help find it => ukmon.imo.net/members/imo/re…
A bit of clarification - we haven't calculated a trajectory yet. This is the sort of #fireball that we'd expect to drop a small rock, but we'll crunch the numbers tomorrow. Apologies for not being clearer in the first place. Horses on hold.
Drum roll - the calculations are done. The result ... a #meteorite probably did land in England last night, but it's too small to hunt for. #FRIPON estimate 100g or less. Needle, haystack, finite resources, etc.
Here's the 6th May #meteorite fall near Stoke-on-Trent as seen from an AllSky7 #fireball camera run by Ben Stanley. Let's hope someone finds the #spacerock

Where did the #Winchcombe meteorite come from? And how did it end up crash landing on a driveway?

Great 🧵 about the #Winchcombe fireball from @meteordoc
Our paper about the #Winchcombe fireball which dropped carbonaceous meteorites in the UK in 2021 has been published in @MeteoriticsPS!

Really excited to see what this instrument can do for meteor science, too. It should be able to catch large bolides (which will look similar to the lightning flashes it’s designed to detect). Could be helpful for @UK_Fireball meteorite recovery work.
Replying to @ESA_EO
Luckily, we will soon be able to monitor ⚡️ from space!
Mounted on the recently launched @eumetsat #MTGI1, the Lightning Imager will provide a continuous monitoring of more than 80% of the Earth disc for detecting lightning taking place between clouds or from cloud & ground.

ALT The Lightning Imager offers a completely new capability for European meteorological satellites. It will continuously monitor more than 80% of the Earth disc for lightning discharges, taking place either between clouds or between clouds and the ground. This new instrument will allow severe storms to be detected in their early stages and will therefore be key for issuing timely warnings. Its detectors are so sensitive that will be able to detect relatively weak lightning, even in full daylight.

Some great clips appearing of a bright meteor bolide that was widely seen from the UK, France, Belgium & the Netherlands during twilight yesterday morning.

Newly-discovered asteroid 2023 DZ2 will sail safely past Earth today. Asteroids pass our planet safely all the time, but a close approach by one of this size (140–310 ft, or 43–95 m) happens only about once per decade. (There is no known threat for at least the next 100 years.)

Thank you all who cake to my LPSC talk yesterday. As nerve racking as it was, I really enjoyed presenting and answering all the thought-provoking questions that came my way. #LPSC2023
Great news! A piece of asteroid #2023CX1 (#SAR2667) from the #fireball over the English Channel on 13th February 2023, has been recovered by #FRIPON/@VigieCiel in Seine Maritime! Congratulations to the team on a successful search! ☄️

Watch the skies tonight for a potential #fireball visible from northern France and Germany, as well as many places in the UK. The object, #asteroid #Sar2667, is estimated at ~1m in size and predicted to harmlessly impact at approx. 03:07 UTC. ☄️

Sounds like a really nice meteor fireball was seen quite widely over the UK at around 20:01UT.
Here’s the first public video I’ve seen of it (below). Quick scan of @UKMeteorNetwork’s excellent live fireball webpage shows it was also picked up by their network cameras too.
If you were an eyewitness or have footage of tonight's #fireball over the UK, please submit a report with @UKMeteorNetwork at: ukmon.imo.net/members/imo/re
This information is very useful and can help us to map the trajectory of the fireball and recover any potential #meteorites ☄️
