As a graduate student, his research doesn’t show much promise. It isn’t especially innovative, methodologically rigorous, or theoretically compelling. His willingness to throw his co-authors & professors under bus when he underachieves though shows real administrative potential!

Don’t think of them as students struggling to master the material, think of them as revenue streams that you want to keep flowing.

🌻Goodbye Fraser Stoddart—this giant of chemistry passed away on December 30, 2024. His scientific achievements first in #carbohydrate chemistry and then in #supramolecular chemistry and #nanoscience have become common knowledge among chemists at least after he received the #NobelPrize in Chemistry in 2016 with Ben Feringa and Jean-Pierre Sauvage. Fraser inspired generations of chemists and mentored hundreds of PhD students and postdocs at a dozen or more institutions where he flocked for shorter or longer periods. A native Scot he studied chemistry @EdinburghUni from 1960 to 1966 when he received his PhD for work with Edmund Hirst. After a postdoc at Queen’s Univ. in Kingston, Ontario, Canada he took up a Lecturer and later Reader position at the Univ. of Sheffield. In 1990 he moved, now as a Prof. of Org. Chem., first to the Univ. of Birmingham and in 1997 to UCLA; from 2003–2007 he was a Director of the California NanoSystems Institute @CNSI_UCSB. In 2008 he joined Northwestern University as a Prof. in Chemistry, and while staying affiliated with Northwestern he took up part-time positions and led research groups at Tianjin Univ. in China (2014), at the Univ. of New South Wales in Australia (2017) and at the Univ. of Hong Kong (2023). Sir Fraser—he was knighted in 2016—will not only be remembered for his science but also for his passionate and lucid lectures as well as for his clear and illustrative publications in which he pioneered in the 1980ies the use of color for didactic purpose primarily with articles in Angew. Chem.—see the legendary “A (2) Catenane Made to Order”, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 1989, Vol. 28, 1396–1399 doi.org/10.1002/anie.1989139…. The chemical community will miss this outspoken advocate of chemistry and science in general.

It seems that @Aromaticist, @UOHaleyLab and Amnon Stanger have been working extra hard in Dubrovnik: not only actively participating in #icesaa3 but also registering participants of summer school on mass-spectrometry during the lunch break!
I am impressed!
