Let’s clear up the debate: OLD studies asked whether social media screen time minutes predict poor mental health. They don’t. BUT recent studies show that specific features and content DO predict negative outcomes as detailed in @APA’s latest report. apa.org/topics/social-media-…

Thanks to @60Minutes for the opportunity to be included in this important piece. 80% of people with eating disorders will never get any kind of help. Technology offers an important solution to this problem, and it also has to be deployed with tight guardrails.
“That was never the content that our team wrote or programmed into the bot,” says Ellen Fitzsimmons-Craft, a psychologist who helped develop Tessa, a chatbot designed to help prevent eating disorders. Tessa was shut down after it gave dieting advice. cbsn.ws/3PVuhzY

In our new paper, we looked at what happend to kids when parents received eating disorder treatment. While the type of treatment parents received didn't really matter, when parents' binge eating improved, kids' secretive eating and food hoarding improved.
A @YalePsych team led by @jalydecker finds that when parents can curb #binge-eating #disorder with #medication and #behavioraltherapy, their children experience less disordered #eating too. brnw.ch/21wHg8P
