This study from @UTSWMedCenter looked at health providers in California and Massachusetts to see how human biases may be passed on into AI tools. Surgical removal of a tumor remains the primary defense against most solid cancers. However, for surgeons distinguishing between a tumor and healthy tissue can be a challenge. Researchers at @UTSA are working on a probe that makes hidden cancer cells glow in real time during surgery, giving surgeons cleaner margins and patients lower risk of recurrence.

Seeing cancer more clearly changes how it's treated. 🔬 Asst Prof. Syed Muhammad Usama is developing a “smart probe” that illuminates triple-negative breast cancer cells in real time during surgery. His goal is to help surgeons better distinguish tumors from healthy tissue, potentially reducing the risk of cancer recurrence.
