dünya sinema tarihinin gelmiş geçmiş en iyi savaş sahnesi 26 sene önce çekildi, daha iyisi henüz gelmedi, muhtemelen bu gidişle daha da gelmez.
No debate. Still, nothing in cinema comes close to this yet

Watching actual vets rip this apart all over this platform has been highly amusing, and well deserved. Atrocious Hollywood mil-slop start to finish.

When all is said and done, it’s perfectly okay for Nolan to have reworked The Odyssey to serve different themes and creative purposes. But it’s equally okay to not like the way in which he’s done it, and feel disappointed by the lack of several inherent Homeric Ethe.

Project Hail Mary is by far the best film - even with its hideously intrusive soundtrack. (Seriously, the sound mixing in this otherwise excellent film has all the sensitivity and appropriateness of a trolleyed circus performer at a funeral)
Bro Odyssey was so trash. I'm tired of people pretending that Christopher Nolan vanity project was any good.

And yet the REAL men idolise Hector. Boys idolise Achilles.
It’s funny how Achilles has become a rallying cry for based manly men, given that in the original Greek myths he tries to get out of fighting by hiding on the island of Skyros pretending to be a woman. If Nolan attempted to film this, there would be rioting.

Just watched The Martian again last night. God it’s still such a fantastic ride! Love it. And I say this as someone who read the novel before seeing the film, and knew the narrative outcomes. I think Mark Watney is one of Matt Damon’s finest rõles.

Well, Pam, this was my own trajectory! I first studied Ancient Greek at school, through which I translated tracts of The Iliad into English.. & promptly fell in love with Hector! THEN I saw Troy in all its flawed glory. Eric Bana was PERFECT. He deepened my devotion to Hector 😁
leggi l'Iliade e ti innamori del personaggio di Ettore, vedi Troy e ti infossi per Eric Bana nei panni di Ettore, non poteva esservi casting migliore, no non la smetterò finché campano queste gif

The interview that explains everything. Don’t mess with the Chinese when it comes to Classics. They know their stuff & are extremely direct about it. Nolan basically admitted that the Odyssey is Oppenheimer 2 & we must apologize for greatness.

Chinese interview: The concept of atonement didn’t really exist in Ancient Greece and it didn’t exist in Homer’s Odyssey. It exists in your Odyssey. Did you Christianize the Odyssey? American interview: spin the snack wheel and then read these thirst tweets they called you zaddy
Hats off to doctoral student and podcaster Zhong Shu in Beijing, China, who did this fascinating and smart interview with Christopher Nolan about THE ODYSSEY yesterday, originally posted to Bilibili. A great listen/watch.

A brilliant interviewer. But Nolan answers in a way that demonstrates a lack of understanding of the source material. He admits he wasn’t very philosophically engaged with the text; that he carried the thematic hobbyhorses of guilt and doom within Oppenheimer into the Odyssey.

Listen, Christopher Nolan. I stand with Homer’s Odyssey, not with a modern version created to make Odysseus easier for us to forgive. You say you did not mean to Christianize the story. But when the Trojan Horse becomes a source of guilt, the journey home becomes penance, and a warrior hungry for glory becomes ashamed of who he is, I have to wonder: are we still watching Homer’s hero, or a modern man sent to therapy in ancient armour? Yes, Xenia matters. But so do kleos, timē, metis and nostos: glory, honour, cunning and the unbearable desire to return home. Homer’s Odysseus is proud, violent, brilliant, selfish, loyal, wounded and deeply human. He is not asking the audience to approve of him. He is trying to reclaim his wife, his son, his home and the name the world almost took from him. I do not need Odysseus to be more likeable. I need him to be recognizable. Perhaps great stories are not supposed to make us comfortable. Perhaps they survive because they force us to face people whose values are not our own. You borrowed Homer’s seas, his gods and his hero, but gave Odysseus the conscience of another age. And I couldn’t help but wonder: when we rewrite the past until it finally agrees with us, are we bringing Homer to life or simply putting him on trial?

"...Fix'd is the term to all the race of earth; And such the hard condition of our birth: No force can then resist, no flight can save, All sink alike, the fearful and the brave..." (Hector's speech; Alexander Pope’s translation; 'lliad" book vi) The beauty 😭
