Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen knew each other for nearly 50 years before becoming close friends on the set of X-Men. Around that time, Sir Patrick passed on the role of Gandalf, which his good friend would go on to make his own. In a later interview he stated “My dear friend Ian McKellen became a living legend with his performance as Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings.” The two will appear together one final time in Avengers: Doomsday. ❤️

Our ILM community offers its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Patrick Stewart, as well as to the galaxy of fans who admired him for his portrayal of Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Marvel's Professor Charles Xavier. ILM cherishes the opportunities we've had to collaborate with Stewart on a variety of productions, most notably Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek Generations, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

TREMORS (1990) is basically a masterclass disguised as a creature feature. The pacing is immaculate, the rules of the Graboid world are established early & the practical effects still hold up beautifully. Just an absurdly well-made monster movie.

Tron (1982) 35mm trailer It didn’t just predict the digital age...it created the visuals for it. First major film with extensive CGI, light cycles racing through a virtual grid, and a world inside the computer. Decades ahead of VR, the metaverse, and our entire digital lives. Pure visionary sci-fi.

DIE HARD was released 38 years ago today. Alan Rickman was told he’d be dropped on the count of three while filming Hans Gruber’s fall. The stunt team let go on two, capturing his genuine look of shock. It was also Rickman’s first film role.
