📖 #ThrowbackThursday | A Look Back at the Beginning of Vibrations Magazine Last year, we looked back at the June 1985 issue of Vibrations as the issue that marked the transition from VI’s newsletter into a full magazine. This time, we’re taking a closer look inside. In “An Introduction to Vibrations,” Ronald L. Eshleman explained the vision behind the newly expanded publication: to create a place where practical vibration knowledge, experience, techniques, and ideas could be shared—and preserved—for others in the field. More than 40 years later, that mission still feels familiar. Today, Vibrations continues to bring together technical articles, case histories, lessons learned, and industry knowledge from vibration professionals—and VI members can explore not only the latest issue, but decades of that history through the Vibrations Magazine archive. 📚 Membership also provides access to an extensive collection of technical resources, including recorded webinars, VIATC proceedings, training videos, and more. The tools and technology may have changed quite a bit since 1985, but the value of sharing knowledge across the vibration community hasn’t. 🔗 Explore Vibration Institute membership and member resources: vi-institute.org/membership/ #VibrationInstitute #ThrowbackThursday #VibrationsMagazine #VibrationAnalysis #ConditionMonitoring #ReliabilityEngineering #PredictiveMaintenance #VibrationNation

The Language of Vibration: Patterns Matter. A vibration spectrum is more than a collection of peaks. The relationships between those peaks—their spacing, harmonics, sidebands, and how they change over time—can provide important clues about what is happening inside a machine. A single frequency may catch your attention, but the broader pattern often provides the context needed to interpret it. That is where vibration analysis becomes more than simply collecting data. It becomes the process of recognizing patterns, understanding machine behavior, and connecting what you see in the signal to what may be happening mechanically. The spacing between peaks can offer clues. The pattern helps tell the story. 📖 #ThrowbackThursday | Before Vibrations Became the Magazine We Know Today For this week’s throwback, we’re going all the way back to Fall 1984 — Volume 10, Number 2 of Vibrations. This issue is especially interesting because it marked the end of an era for the Vibration Institute. Vibrations was still being published in its original newsletter-style format, and readers were told that beginning in 1985, it would take on a new magazine format with an expanded focus on vibration technology, practical problems, case histories, industry developments, and Institute news. The Fall 1984 issue offers a snapshot of the vibration community at the time, including: 🔹 “Critical Speeds and Balance Sensitivity of Overhung Fans” by Ronald L. Eshleman 🔹 Updates from Vibration Institute chapters around the country 🔹 Information on upcoming machinery vibration analysis and modal testing courses 🔹 A call for papers for the 9th Annual Meeting on Machinery Vibration Monitoring and Analysis More than 40 years later, Vibrations continues to preserve and share the technical knowledge, experience, and history of the vibration analysis profession. 📚 And VI members can explore that history for themselves. Vibration Institute membership includes access to the Vibrations Magazine archive — including issues like this one and decades of technical articles and case histories — along with recorded webinars, VIATC proceedings, training videos, technical resources, and more. There is a lot of knowledge tucked away in the VI archives. Sometimes a look back is just as valuable as looking ahead. 🔗 Learn more about Vibration Institute membership: vi-institute.org/membership/ #VibrationInstitute #VibrationsMagazine #VibrationAnalysis #ConditionMonitoring #Reliability #PredictiveMaintenance #VibrationNation

#ThrowbackThursday takes us back to the September 1996 issue of Vibrations Magazine and Brad Barton’s case study, “The Case of the Wandering Phase.” When a vibration problem doesn’t respond the way you expect, what do you do next? In this case study, what initially appeared to be a fairly straightforward balance problem quickly became more complicated when the data began telling a different story. Barton’s experience is a great reminder that effective vibration analysis is about more than collecting readings. It requires looking closely at what the data is actually telling you, questioning assumptions, and sometimes considering explanations that aren’t immediately obvious. Thirty years later, that approach to troubleshooting is just as relevant. Take a look back at this case study from the September 1996 issue of Vibrations and see where the investigation led. #VibrationInstitute #ThrowbackThursday #VibrationsMagazine #VibrationAnalysis #ConditionMonitoring #PredictiveMaintenance #ReliabilityEngineering #MachineryDiagnostics

Every machine has a story to tell. Vibration analysis helps us read it. A change in amplitude, a new frequency component, or a shift in the vibration signature can provide valuable clues about what is happening inside rotating equipment long before a problem becomes obvious. From imbalance and misalignment to looseness, bearing defects, and resonance, vibration data gives reliability professionals a powerful way to better understand machine condition and make more informed maintenance decisions. The key is not simply collecting data. It is knowing how to interpret what the machine is telling you. That combination of strong fundamentals, quality data, and thoughtful analysis is what makes vibration analysis such an important part of condition monitoring and reliability. 🔗 Learn more about vibration analysis training, certification, and technical resources from the Vibration Institute: vi-institute.org/ #VibrationInstitute #VibrationAnalysis #ConditionMonitoring #ReliabilityEngineering #PredictiveMaintenance #MachineReliability

🔄 #ThrowbackThursday | Lessons Worth Re-Learning This week, we’re highlighting “Balancing Techniques Forgotten (Or Lessons We Had To Re-Learn The Hard Way)” by Thomas B. Lantrip, PE, featured in the latest Summer 2026 issue of Vibrations Magazine. Even experienced analysts can benefit from going back to the fundamentals. Through real-world examples, Lantrip looks at some of the details that can make or break a successful balance job, including phase reference accuracy, sensor selection and polarity, slow roll compensation, repeatability, and proper validation of vibration data. One of the paper’s recurring reminders is simple: good balancing starts with good, repeatable data. When the data doesn’t repeat, you may be trying to balance a moving target. 📖 Want to read the full paper and the rest of the Summer 2026 issue? Access to Vibrations Magazine is just one of the benefits of Vibration Institute membership. Members can explore the current issue and archive of past issues, along with benefits including access to live and recorded webinars, technical resources, and more. Whether you’re revisiting the fundamentals or continuing to build your technical knowledge, there’s plenty to explore as part of the Vibration Nation. 🔗 Learn more about VI membership: vi-institute.org/membership/ #VibrationInstitute #ThrowbackThursday #VibrationsMagazine #VibrationAnalysis #MachineryBalancing #ConditionMonitoring #ReliabilityEngineering #PredictiveMaintenance #VibrationNation
