(1/2) Chapter 2: Up to Snuff
"Not Good Enough, Potter!" Malfoy snapped at him, kicking his shoe into place. He had stepped a half pace instead of a quarter.
It had been five days since the Yule Ballâs announcement, and Harry had been through two official lessons with Professor McGonagall (both with Malfoy) and was painfully in the process of attending his first impromptu practice with Dracona Malfoy. Harry had been forced in a way to reluctantly accept what he could only perceive as a threat. Despite finding Malfoy to be at best a nuisance, and at worst, a danger to his life, Harry had to admit she was an exceptionally talented dancer. Despite this, Harry didnât find her to be the friendliest of teachers.
Malfoy had broken away from him and pointed her wand at the music box on the wall, stopping the music. She had her arms crossed and was staring daggers at him.
âYou are not feeling the music, Potter. You are still thinking too much. Stop thinking about where to step with that tiny brain of yours and just move your legs properly. Try again.â The waltz resumed. Malfoy had a habit of pacing when she was irritated, and now she hounded him about his technique by endlessly circling him. Harry felt like he was playing Quidditch with how Malfoy relentlessly chased and pestered him. Harry was used to performing in front of hostile crowds, but he found himself counting the minutes until his lesson with her was over. Whatever pleasantries she had shown him earlier in the week vanished the moment she began instructing.
Harry finished his step progressions and wiped the sweat from his brow. âCan we⌠can we please take a break? I donât want to use my entire free weekend being abused by you.â Malfoy flicked her wand from under her arm and the music was silenced. âBetter? If you could dance as well as you complain, I wouldnât have to get onto you so often, Potter.â Harry flopped to the floor. He had changed out of his Hogwarts robes into something more suited for dancing, but the abandoned room they were practicing in was surprisingly warm. Harry couldnât complain too much due to the snow outside. Harry scanned the peculiar chamber.
âMalfoy, I never knew that there was a dance hall on the seventh floor. I must have walked past it a million times.â Malfoy had sunk into her chair and followed his eyes around the ceiling. âI wouldnât put it past you to miss the obvious.â She played with her hair without looking at him. The Gryffindor dormitory was also on the seventh-floor, so Harry was perplexed as to how he had missed such a large space. It had high vaulted ceilings, mirrored walls on all four sides, and was almost exactly what one might imagine if they thought of a dance studio. Harry could feel it in his legs that today's session was over for him. Malfoy sat cross-legged on the other side of the dance floor.
âHow did you know this place was up here then?â Harry mused breathlessly. Malfoy cast her eyes back upon Harry and took a deep breath, âYou of all people surely arenât judging me for sneaking around, are you?â she beamed with a coy smile. The hypocrisy was not lost on Harry; An accusation coming from someone who notoriously bent the rules every year must've sounded rich. She continued acting distant and lounged in her chair like she owned the place.
âFor your information Potter, Iâve been coming here to dance since first year. One doesnât magically become as talented as I am without practice. I missed the dancing lessons at Malfoy Manor from when I was a girl. Anytime I got homesick, wanted to run away, if I felt like dancing, I would find this room hereâŚâ Harry chuckled and a disarmed look came over Malfoyâs blushing face.
âWhen you teased me about practicing for the ballet, I hadnât the faintest clue you were talking about yourself!â Harry snickered. Malfoy narrowed her eyes as if searching for a memory before her face lit up. âIâm NOT a Ballerina, Potter. I only- you can remember my Quidditch banter from years ago?â Harryâs wit took over, âI tried my best to ignore you actually, but you have a habit of being really loud and obnoxious. Some of them were real charmers though.â
The two of them laughed heartily, but trailed off. Idle chitchat with Malfoy was still something new for Harry and the conversations usually ended clumsily. He couldnât help but feel he was being a little childish, but Harry was afraid to excuse himself. It wasnât beyond possibility that she might attack him. Harry wagered his chances and began to speak, âMalfoy, I think this might be enough for today. I still have studying to do, and well itâs getting late-â Malfoy jumped from her seat and stretched her arms widely. She had rolled her sleeves up and her hair was in a ponytail. She usually only wore it that way for Quidditch. âCorrect you are, Potter. I have my own life as well.â She picked up his bag and walked it over to him on the floor. âKeep working on your half turns. We'll start pirouettes and spins next time.â Harry groaned as he rose from the floor. âHonestly Potter⌠Canât expect me to keep doing charity work all day long. You really should pay me back.â
Harry was relieved to be finished, but he figured they had ended on a good note. He couldâve continued chatting, but he was supposed to meet with Hermione to study. He made his way to a partition in the corner that they used to change in. Harry couldn't dress for dancing in the dormitories without being seen, and he would be mortified to change in front of her. As he pulled on his jumper he heard her yell from outside after him. âWhat time next week?â He heard her approaching now and was worried she might barge in on him.
âJust a second!â He heard a moan from outside âDo you really think I want to see you naked, Potter? Answer the question.â He opened the curtain after changing to see her aggravated look had returned. âWhich one?â She smacked him square in the chest pushing him back into the booth. âOww! What now Malfoy? You already told me when and where.â She puffed up and put a hand on her hip. âIâd just like to hear you say it. Itâs a common courtesy, Potter. Maybe Mudbloods and Muggles wouldn't know any better, but I'd expect you to show some mutual respect.â Harry winced and felt impatient, but he also sensed an ulterior motivation. He remembered McGonagallâs warning.
âThe time we agreed upon. That still works for me. I know your time is more valuable than mine.â
She was annoyed by his answer. âFine by me. And I wonât expect a thank you for taking such risks to help you, Potter.â Harry found this the funniest part of their arrangement. But he wouldnât want to be seen alone around her either. âWhat was your excuse to come up here today? I said I had detention.â Malfoy just gave him a vapid stare, âLike it matters to you, Potter. Just donât be seen leavingâŚâ She moped back to her chair and grabbed her robe, âLeave. So I can start changing.â
Harry did as she commanded. Walking back onto the seventh-floor hallway, he nearly ran into Crabbe and Goyle. Harry nodded, âHiya. Did we miss anything interesting?â The two just scowled as Harry walked away grinning. Sharing a secret with Malfoy was strange enough. Knowing that she had enlisted her two prats to keep watch was so odd that Harry couldnât think about it too hard without hurting himself laughing. Somehow he knew her secret was safe with them, hidden away somewhere in their empty skulls.
------
The next morning, Harry, Ron and Hermione ate breakfast in the great hall, which seemed to buzz with a new fervor. The four tables usually assigned to the four houses had noticed a sharp increase in inter-house fraternization as boys and girls began pairing off for the Yule Ball, which was only a week or so away. Hermione was giving Harry a rare break from scolding over the second task; the Yule Ball had shifted the focus of most of his classmates towards more trivial matters. Ron opened the conversation as he kept looking over his shoulder at what was normally the Slytherin Table. As of late, it sat many of the guests from Durmstrang, including one Viktor Krum.
âSay, Harry, You know Viktor now right? Figure you could ask him for me? Maybe he could introduce me to someone for the Ball.â Harry only looked up from his Daily Prophet article and gave an unconvincing, âSure thing Ron.â Hermione rolled her eyes and turned to Harry with intent. He believed a lecture was coming, so he pretended to really scrutinize Rita Skeeterâs latest hit piece. âHarry⌠We need to talk about the Ball. And who youâre thinking of taking with you.â Ron had perked up and turned around. âOh donât worry Hermione, I wonât ask you- I would never.â Harry said, jumping to conclusions. She hit him with her tablecloth. âYou know thatâs not what I meant you ass. This is serious! Please tell me youâve given it some thought.â Ron appeared to relax some.
Harry acted stoically, but he couldnât help the sinking feeling. He really did not want to bridge this conversation with Hermione, or anyone for that matter. With Sirius maybe, he could feel comfortable. But talking about girls was something Harry just wanted to bury. âHadnât really thought about it.â Harry lied. Hermione cut through his defenses, âSome of the girls are saying Cho has been pretty popular with proposals. She hasnât said yes to any as far as Iâm aware, but it probably wonât stay that way for long.â Harry felt like drowning. Cho was who he had planned on asking. Had he waited too long? He didnât really know or like his options beyond her. He looked across the hall to Slytherinâs table and saw Malfoy in what looked like a heated conversation with Pansy Parkinson.
âNo! No Harry- Slytherins are strictly off limits! Both of you, I forbid it!â Harry started to defend himself but was cut off by Ron who shook his head, âWhat are you, our mother? But⌠yeah, probably best to steer clear of any of those.â Harry felt defensive, âI hadnât planned on that, no. I havenât gone totally mental yet.â Malfoy had now grabbed Pansyâs robe and was nearly standing over the table. Ron scratched his head, âI know Fred and George were just messing with you, but whatâs the deal with her wanting to practice with you in McGonagallâs?â Ron caught himself and put his hands out, âI mean no offense Harry, youâre a catch and all, but⌠It has to be a trap right? Like sheâs trying to draw you over to the dark side? Make a fool of you in front of everyone.â Hermione finally lost her composure, dropping her book on the table, âShe hasnât asked you has she!? Say no Harry! Donât even entertain that foul woman. Ronâs right. It would be beyond foolish.â
Ron felt buoyed by her comment and turned to Harry almost gloatingly. Harry was forced to respond, âThanks, I donât need either of you to tell me that. McGonagall said the same thing. Iâm only still her partner because- Well, sheâs actually a really good dancer.â
âAt least she's good for something besides being evil.â Ron snorted. Harry's answer was mostly true and his friends seemed to buy it. He noticed that Malfoy was no longer sitting at the table and a confused looking Pansy was looking towards the entrance hall where Malfoy was storming off. Harry nearly rose up to follow her but stopped himself. "Either way Harry, you should probably get moving and ask someone. You canât show up alone, it makes Hogwarts look bad.â Hermione was back to her book having not noticed anything. Ron was staring at some Beauxbatons girls at the Hufflepuff table and looked deep in thought. Harry stared at Rita's unpleasant image dancing on his paper and felt he had already made his decision.
------
The following days did not assuage any of Harryâs concerns regarding the Ball. Even though he had told himself a decision had been made, he still had not mustered the courage to ask Cho. Girls with whom he had never even spoken were approaching him at an alarming rate. And while he was flattered, he was also unwilling to accept any invitations if Cho was still available. At least his lessons with McGonagall were now going smoothly. Harry felt as though he had improved massively in such a short time. Once he realized Malfoy wouldnât cut his head off in front of everyone, his focus was greatly improved. Even his private lessons with Malfoy became something to look forward to instead of something he dreaded. Spending the time learning to dance properly with Malfoy was a welcome break from the constant and unwanted outside attention. She also wasnât nearly as abrasive in private.
The final class with McGonagall had involved a complete hands-on dance with a partner. And for the first time since it had been announced, Harry felt confident in the thought that he wouldnât embarrass himself or the school. It was still awkward to hold Malfoyâs hand or touch her waist, so Harry was glad the classes in the public eye were over. Malfoy was adamant that his private lessons would continue right up to the Yule Ball. During one of Moodyâs lectures, an Origami crane had flown onto his desk, and the letter inside was from none other than Malfoy. She had a habit of initialing DM on her work. The message was short and to the point:
~Two more sessions, 20th & 21st, Same place, Same time~
~DM~
âHas Malfoy at least gotten any better at her doodles? Let me see how she's tortured cartoon Harry this time.â Ron grabbed the letter before Harry could react, leaving him scrambling. Ron made a putrid face as he scanned the small square of paper. Harry looked anxiously over his arm and noticed the words had vanished, replaced by an animated Harry slipping and falling in a cartoony ballroom. âTell her sheâs improving. Git.â And Ron flung the drawing back to him. Harry looked over his shoulder to see Dracona laughing with Millicent Bulstrode, and Ron pulled his shoulder back. âDonât mind them Harry- â But Harry was almost too impressed to answer. He didnât mind at all; Malfoy had used their public animosity as a perfect means to make their communication impervious. It was an incredible cover. Harry pulled his wand out and whispered âIncendioâ and the paper flamed into dust.
Harry was willing to continue the lessons, but he still lacked a partner for the Ball. And hiding away for private dances during personal hours seemed to work against meeting any women. Harry pondered this as he walked up to the seventh-floor. He saw Crabbe and Goyle were posted on opposite hallway corners in front of the danceroom. Harry found great joy in thinking up new ways of pestering his new fair-weather friends. âSorry constables, but I think she wanted a double session today. Hope you both are free to stand around doing nothing for another three hours.â Harry started to chuckle as they worked out the time on both hands and looked troubled. But before he reached the door, he saw a group of Ravenclaws out of the corner of his eye.
A group of girls in their blue-lined robes were leaving Flitwickâs charms class, and Harry had spotted her. Cho was walking with them but she hadn't seen him and was making her way to the grand staircase. Harry looked panicked towards Goyle who stood vacantly, âUmm- Hold this, Iâll be back in a second, or two- Thanks.â Goyle held Harryâs bag as one would unwillingly handle a stranger's baby, and Harry ran after Cho. He caught up to her on the sixth floor and shouted across the bannister. âCHO! CHO! ITâS ME HARRY!â
Cho had heard him and stopped, but so had the crowd of girls who were with her. They giggled much to Harryâs displeasure while he caught his breath. âCa- can we talk?â Harry was glad that Cho wasnât laughing, and he managed to split her from her cackling classmates. Harry and Cho stopped in a small alcove, and as Harry tried to start talking a lump was forming in his throat. He knew he was nervous, heâd had eyes on Cho for a while, but something was making him apprehensive. Like he shouldnât ask her at all.
âWangoballwime?â Harryâs words came out in a jumbled and nervous wreck.
âPardon me?â Cho waited graciously. Harry had to clear his throat.
âDâyou- Do you want to go to the Ball with me?â Harryâs stomach leaped upon hearing his own voice. Despite having practiced this exact scenario hundreds of times, the words came out truncated and robotic. Choâs face told Harry it was already too late. Her smile had faded at the edges, and her eyes drooped. âIâm really sorry Harry, but Iâd already agreed to go with someone else.â
Harry figured as much and began wringing his hands reflexively. âYeah. No- Thatâs great. I just figured⌠Yeah.â His insides had stopped doing flips and now he wondered if he had any guts at all. A great hollow sensation became overwhelming, and he wanted nothing more than to walk back up the stairs. âSorry Harry, Iâll get going now. See you later okay?â Cho gave a pained look and Harry made an unconscious wave before slowly ascending the stairs back to the seventh-floor. He fought an incredible urge to ask who she was going with, but it didn't matter. Now he only wanted to crawl back to his bed and never come out. But he was already late in meeting with Malfoy. As he approached, Crabbe began to grin upon seeing his expression. Goyle exited the studio, closing the door behind him. He was without Harryâs bag. He grunted and motioned with his neck as if to say, âItâs in thereâ.
Malfoy was sitting in the center of the dancefloor holding Harryâs bag, rifling through his papers and reading. Normally Harry would be outraged at such an invasion of his privacy, but currently Harry felt a bitter nothingness and simply walked to the partition in the corner to change. As Harry changed she spoke out loud, âWhile youâre nice and occupied, Iâm letting you know I took the liberty of pilfering through your things, Potter. No secret love letters, So sad! But what a relief, good to know you'll be nice and focused today.â Harry wasnât really listening as he put on his dress shoes. âHurry up in there lover boy, remember that weâre on a tight schedule. You gave me a date and time for a reason.â
Harry stepped out and made way for Malfoy, who was reclining on her elbows and looking at him upside down. âWhy not just come here already dressed? You could wear that stupid cloak, it would be easy.â She was holding up a single parchment with Harryâs Defense Against the Dark Arts notes on it. He snatched the paper and his bag back from her, stuffing his things inside. âBecause you said it would scare the two trolls standing outside. Also people will notice if I change in the dormitory. I already told you. Believe me, if I could avoid you, I would.â Harry was very aggravated and didnât like repeating himself. Malfoy stood up and moved to turn on the music. âYou canât dance well if youâre in a pissy mood, Potter. Come, take my hand.â
Harry threw his bag into her usual chair and stomped over to her and clenched her hand. Harry immediately regretted this as a look of consternation grew across her face. He loosened his grip, putting a hand on her waist and letting her take the lead. They spun around the room in a fairly simple maneuver five or so times, something they mustâve done a hundred times by this point over two weeks. She was looking at him quizzically, as if trying to study his thoughts. He didn't like it. Harry was growing frustrated as to why they were still practicing such simple steps. After McGonagallâs lessons had ended, Harry didnât think he needed further instruction.
Harry piped up, âCan we just skip the warm up please and do something different?â But he felt like he spoke too loudly. Malfoy released him and flung him three or more steps forward. âYou want to skip practice. Fine. Forget the basics. Jump straight to the incredible stuff for the stupendous Potter. You tell me how to teach, go on.â Harry was irked and regretted saying anything, âI donât understand you Malfoy. Why even put me through all of this. Why are you even doing this? Why are you taking this so seriously? No one is watching us. Dâyou get some sort of sick laugh watching me embarrass myself?â Malfoy had stopped pacing in circles around him now and had begun massaging her arms through the sleeves of her grey sweater. âIâve already told you that, Potter. Whatâs got you so distracted you want to quit all of the sudden?â
Harry had dug himself into a hole with a conversation he never meant to start. âForget it, you know thatâs not what I meant. Doesnât matter why, Iâm just not in the mood today.â Malfoy looked at him sternly before flicking off the music with a sigh. âGoyle told me as much. Heâs more observant than youâd think⌠Donât worry, youâll find someone else.â Harry didnât understand what she meant.
Malfoy approached him closely and Harry became afraid. She slowly and somewhat awkwardly put a hand on his shoulder. Her face looked strained and discomforted.
âForget about that Cho girl, Harry.â
Harry was stunned for some reason. How had she known? Why had she called him Harry? Why was she treating him like a child? Before he could process everything, heâd already smacked her hand off of him. He lashed out, âWhy do you care about who I ask!? What business of yours is that? And who told you?â Malfoy held her arm with the opposite hand and looked indignant. âGoyle. Goyle told me. I already told you. He said you ran after Cho. It was a good guess. You know why? Because I already knew, Harry. I watched Cedric ask Cho three days ago.â Her tone was stern but there was implicit strain in her voice, like it pained her to explain herself. It made Harry even angrier.
âStop teasing me Malfoy, I donât wanna hear it.â Harry tried walking away.
âWhat!?â Malfoy was also getting riled up. She barged through her chair knocking it over as she distanced herself from Harry. âHarry! YOU waited too long for Cho, and YOU lost your chance. I'm NOT teasing, it's the truth! YOU acted the SAME way you do with dancing. YOU got yourself frozen up thinking instead of just doing it. Donât blame me Harry, you-â
âSHUT UP MALFOY! JUST SHUT UP!â
Malfoyâs eyes sank as she stopped speaking mid thought.
âSTOP CALLING ME HARRY!â He screamed.
âSince when have you ever called me anything other than Potter?â He was losing his patience. âIâve been asking myself why I keep coming back here. Just to waste time with someone who hates me. You keep begging me to show up and do the same damned moves over and over again. Turn, turn, half turn. I'm SICK of dancing with you!â Harry was shaking all over. That empty feeling had been replaced by a seething rage. And all of it was directed entirely at her.
âYou never had to say yes! You could leave whenever you want, you ass!â Malfoy choked back at him, staying far away.
Harry lost control and ran up to her, âExcept you donât mean that! If you think keeping me here is going to make me ask you to that stupid Ball, Youâre dead wrong! Itâs never going to happen!â Dracona got very quiet and crossed her arms. She couldn't hide how hurt she was feeling and her eyes were turning red and glassy. âLike youâd even ask. And now youâre back to how you usually treat me. Like everyone does to me. The same as that Mudblood and Weasley⌠You're all the same. Please, just leave if you hate me that muchâŚâ
âOh come off it- Stop joking around and leave me alone! Stay away from me.â Harry contemptuously grabbed his things while Malfoy was standing alone in the middle of the room. She didnât say another word. She only watched him with a destitute look in her eyes. Harry faltered for a moment, as he could've sworn he saw her lip quiver. Harry entered the partition in the corner and thought about changing, when he heard the door slam behind him. Peeking his head out of the curtain, he saw the room was empty all except for his reflection in the wall. Harry stepped out into the hallway, and there was no sign of Malfoy, Crabbe or Goyle. Harry was suddenly overcome with an immense feeling of shame. He wished he could take those words back, wished he could go back to feeling empty, this felt so much worse. Harry made the long march back to the Gryffindor dormitory with his head lowered; his dress shoes clacked loudly with each step, echoing through the empty hall.

The Secret Dance in a Room of Requitement
Chapter 1: An Ancient Tradition
As the clouds cleared over the Transfiguration courtyard, Harry walked mindlessly across the yard with Neville Longbottom. The first task had already been two weeks ago, but Harry seemingly moved through the last month as if a blur. He had spent nights awake dreading facing a dragon, but now he felt as though he doubted the experience had even been real. Things and people had moved on as they usually do, giddy for the next task and distracted by fleeting whims of youth.
Neville was deep into a truly riveting tangent about Mimbulus Mimbletonia. A magical plant Harry had never heard about but assuredly must be incredibly interesting, seeing as Neville hadnât let Harry get a word in the entire way down from the Gryffindor dormitory. Neville had been one of the few people who had continued speaking with Harry after his name had erupted from the Goblet of Fire, and while Harry appreciated the company from time to time, Neville could often be a little⌠much.
Harry and Neville rounded the corner to Professor McGonagallâs Transfiguration classroom, where a large crowd had formed around the doorway.
âBut thatâs exactly what makes them so amazing, you see! The stink sap is such an ingenious defense mechanism; Professor Sprout really sounded like sheâd help me find some after my paper-â Harry had silenced Neville with a conciliatory look before approaching the crowd. âI believe you Neville, however Iâd like to figure out whatâs going on now.â Harry said, as he and Neville found Dean Thomas at the outside of the gathering. Some in the crowd still glared at Harry.
âWhy is everyone waiting outside? McGonagall always leaves her door open.â Harry asked. Dean turned and spoke animatedly. âNo one knows. We heard her from the inside to wait outside, Seamus swears he heard a lion.â
Seamus spun around with a red face. âI did too! Why? Is he telling stories again?â He raised his fist as if pretending to swing at Dean. âItâs Filch, theyâre moving the furniture you muppet.â With that the two pretended to shadowbox for an embarrassingly long time.
Lavender Brown rolled her eyes and turned to speak in her usually lilted and vexed tone, âGranger got here first. She wouldâve ripped the door off its hinges if McGonagall hadnât told her to stop.â Lavender and Parvati laughed and returned to gossiping. Hermione was squarely stood in front of the door, as if refusing to relinquish her spot. Harry was relieved that a mystery in the Transfiguration classroom was the worst of his concerns. Large crowds of students had become a task in themselves to avoid; he had been public enemy number one following his announcement as a Triwizard Champion. Two thirds of Hogwarts had to own âPOTTER STINKSâ merchandise and flocks of students had become things to avoid lest he wanted to suffer endless mockery.
Harry and Neville maneuvered around the throng of students to try and sit on the wall until the classroom door opened, but Harry was stopped by the sight of a blonde haired girl, unsmiling and staring with piercing grey eyes. Neville choked on his words upon seeing Malfoy and dropped his textbooks. Papers splashed and fluttered in the air.
âThe books stay in your hands Longbottom, not on the floor.â Neville shook as he knelt down to pick them up after Harry gave a reassuring look. Harry chimed back, âBrought the right course work this time? McGonagall might even accept your work from third year as late if you behave.â Malfoy flashed him a dry look and pretended to laugh. Malfoy then leaned off the wall and tilted her head sidelong, looking down at Neville scrambling. Her eyes darted back to Harry, head still bent.
âSince when were you one of the top students in the school, Potter? Is this a school you and Longbottom have set up?â The sentence was detached but spoken with a hint of venom. Neville gathered his things and gave the two a sheepish look before jogging somewhere else. Harry now stood across from Malfoy who had returned to her perch on the wall. Harry always felt trouble when alone with Dracona, especially if Ron and Hermione were absent. He stayed frowning at her, and she had noticed.
âYou really should try to smile more Potter, might take the focus off of the gash on your forehead.â And she gestured a hooked finger over her right eye while biting her tongue. Harry looked down at her robe and noticed she was naturally wearing a âPOTTER STINKSâ button, but it appeared to be malfunctioning, as it only read, âPOTTERâ.
Harry pointed, âLooks like your badge is broken.â Dracona looked down and blankly stared at the pin before snickering. âWouldnât want anyone thinking I support you.â she said flippantly as she pretended to shine it. Harry wasnât amused, âHope you made your fortune selling that shoddy con.â Dracona unpinned the button and casually flipped it through her fingers. âWhoâs idea do you think it was? Iâm offended, Iâm not like those Weasley swindlers, please Potter.â
Malfoy tossed the button to Harry who clumsily caught it. âYou can have that one for free, Potter, since it's so âdefectiveâ. Besides, the enchantments on all of them wear out soon anyways.â Harry held it in his hand for a moment before feeling strongly compelled to drop it, what if it had been hexed? He wouldnât put it past Malfoy. He hesitated however, and he looked back to Malfoy, who despite her teasing seemed remarkably nonhostile. Surely her ill-will was being deftly hidden. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âGood grief Potter, not everyone is out to get you. You should be thanking me for the present. Consider it a congratulations for not getting yourself killed by that dragon. That won me more money than some pea-brained scam.â Harry waited a moment and thought, Malfoy bet money on me⌠winning? Not Losing? But before he could ask, the door had opened and the students began flooding into the classroom. Malfoy swung her bag over her shoulder then gave Harry a snobby smile, blowing a raspberry before following the crowd in. Harry didnât realize he was staring, but he had also felt a strange desire to continue that conversation.

The delay was as Dean surmised, all of the desks and chairs had been moved to the walls or were levitating near the ceiling. Directly in front of the doorway stood a massive gramophone, which Professor McGonagall and Mr. Filch guarded with varying levels of excitement. The empty room was loud with idle chatter echoing off the walls. McGonagall cleared her throat and clapped her raised hands.
âAttention! Quiet please, may I have everyoneâs attentionâŚâ As the room quieted down McGonagall began to address them with a thin lipped smile. âThank you⌠As you all are aware, the Triwizard Tournament has altered much of Hogwartsâ normal curriculum, and with the first trial finishedâŚâ The Professor gave Harry a proud look from the corner of her eye, âAn esteemed and traditional celebration is fast approaching- The Yule Ball.â Confused murmurs spread through the boys while a few shrill yelps came from the girls.
âOn Christmas-Eve night, we will gather for a celebration of well-mannered frivolity. This event is not only a chance for us to socialize with our guests, but it is also an opportunity to represent ourselves as respectable hosts.â Most of the students were largely unaware as to why this had anything to do with McGonagallâs classroom being empty.
âMost importantly, this etiquette is necessary if one wishes to partake in the ceremony. Which is primarily, as you may have guessed, a dance.â The girls were beside themselves, while the boys slouched and tried to look disinterested.
âTherefore, instruction is necessary in proper manners regarding a ballroom dance. Transfiguration class will be replaced two times per week, for the next two weeks. So, would the girls move to the right side of the classroom, boys to the left.â Harry watched as the classroom erupted with the buzz of excitement and turned to Ron who looked indignant. âWhy in the bloody hell would they force us to dance on Christmas-Eve of all nights.â Fred and George had popped in behind the two of them and wore their quintessential grins. âDâyou think Ron is lacking in proper Waltzing etiquette?â Fred quipped with an exaggerated flourish. âRonâs already a professional when it comes to dancing alone!â George chuckled. Ron flushed red and turned to smack them.
âFor our initial lesson we will practice timing and the basic movements and patterns of your standard Wizardâs Ball. So quickly now, pair up. One boy to one girl.â Harryâs heart sank and he turned to find solace in Ron, but he had already stood up and was scanning the opposite side of the room. His eyes locked on someone, before he turned back to Harry. He knew Ron had found Hermione and felt he was about to bolt. Before Harry could even speak, they were racing across the room. As they arrived however, Hermione had already paired up with Anthony Goldstein from Ravenclaw. Ron and Harry both had the same idea, that dancing with Hermione seemed like the least embarrassing and least awkward choice.
Harry and Ron returned defeated to find Fred and George making zero effort to find any partners, rather they were laughing at Harry and Ronâs retreat. Ron put on a blustery act, âYâknow, you twos canât dance with each other!â Fred and George looked at one another before whistling across the room to a pair of Hufflepuff girls. They mimed invitations with their hands and comical pirouettes, before grinning once again and winking at Ron. Ron incredulously threw his hands up.
âSee Ron, you not being able to find some makes sense-â said Fred.
âItâs natural, weâre all used to it by now-â said George.
âItâs Harry weâre worried for. He shouldnât worry about asking anyone-â said Fred.
âHe defeated this dragon a couple days ago. Maybe you heard about it-â said George.
âIt was all the rave-â said Fred
Ron hushed them and waved his arms. Harry tried to correct them, âYou both are forgetting that anyone not in Gryffindor still hates me! And every girl from our house is taken already.â
âEven Hermione.â Ron chimed. Harry gave him a stupefied look and shook his head.
âWe donât get it.â They said in unison. Ron stammered while Harry continued to scan the right side of the room, holding onto the hope that there was someone he wouldnât embarrass himself in front of. He felt a hand clamp down on his right shoulder and a finger jutted past his left. George spoke quietly at first, âLooks like Malfoy is available. Thatâll be the dragon youâre facing for the second task, Mr. Champion.â He could barely contain his mirth.
âWhat!?â Harry spun his head around but didnât move. He began to laugh maniacally, but George didnât make a sound, rather he looked dead serious. Fred didnât lose any time, âTen Galleons says he doesnât.â And George nearly ripped Fredâs arm off, âDEAL! Now where in the hell will you find ten Galleons you bum?â Fred pointed to his temple, âOff of the fat stack of gold Ludo Bagman still owes us from the Quidditch World cup genius!â They trailed off before returning to pester Ron about a dorky girl from Ravenclaw.
Harry stood staring at Malfoy again. He knew the twins were trying to trick him as usual. Get a big laugh out of him getting hexed in front of everyone. She was sat in a classroom chair backwards with her chin on her hand. She looked thoroughly unimpressed and bored with McGonagallâs demonstration. But Harry couldnât help but notice her hair was perfectly straight, some of which draped over her shoulders. Her bangs were messy. Had she always worn it that way? He remembered her wearing a headband for some reason. She was sitting side-saddle, and her legs were crossed at the ankles. Harry began to think rapidly.
She is⌠technically still a girl⌠I hadnât ever really noticed
She had seemed pleasant to him outside of class, nicer than normal. Heâd thought it had been a trick also but it wasnât. This is only practice after all, itâs not like Iâm asking her to attend the Ball with me. Harry thought about how he wouldnât lose any money regardless of his choice or the outcome. Not like he couldnât afford losing ten Galleons anyways. He couldnât, however, afford to lose an arm or even his head if Malfoy chose to attack him for such a stupid joke. A behavior of hers which Harry had unfortunately grown wary of due to her capacity for violence over the years. The only thing heâd lose is his pride.
To Hell with it
Harry marched across the hall straight for Dracona, the Weasley siblings were preoccupied with teasing each other to stop him. Harry ended up stopping a few feet before her chair. Upon seeing him she raised her head from her fist and turned to face him. He sensed an odd apprehension, not only from himself but from Dracona as well. She hadnât expected his approach. Neither had Harry. She began apprehensively, âPotter?â
âI need a partner.â Harry felt that less was better.
Draconaâs demeanor changed and Harry could see the sneering retort charging behind her lips. She leaned forward still sitting, âThatâs not how you ask a lady to dance, Potter.â She was enjoying this. Harry grit his teeth, âI supposed so, yes.â
She was smirking devilishly now, and Harry was beginning to regret doing something this stupid for free. âCouldnât find anyone else, so you figured youâd ask me, eh Potter?â Harry was growing impatient, and the other girls around Malfoy were either staring from a safe distance or looked at him with total disgust. âI accept.â
What
âUnder certain conditions.â Dracona shot up from her chair and held out a hand, palm and fingers pointing downwards. âI am a distinguished witch from a proud wizarding family. I expect you to follow all instructions Potter. You are not to step on any of my toes.â
Harry was stunned. Heâd hadnât really thought about what entailed her saying yes. Dracona continued, âShall you make a fool of yourself, or worse, make a fool out of me you wonât live to see the second task.â Harryâs mind was racing, trying simultaneously to comprehend Malfoyâs demands and also how he would survive such a gauntlet of impossible requests. Malfoy had stopped listing requirements when she raised her eyebrow at Harry. âAre you just going to leave a lady standing here? Itâs rather rude.â She shook her hand again making her silver bands jangling, âOr shall I find someone else?â Harry had been given an out, but when he turned around to see the Weasleyâs staring at him in horror, he suddenly felt safer near Malfoy. He took her hand timidly.
Malfoy must have sensed his hesitation as she relinquished her arm and roamed around his left side. âHow pitiful for Hogwartsâ mighty champion, to be afraid of a girl. Looks like I canât expect you to lead worth a damn. Like a Half-Blood would know anything about higher culture. Follow me.â She threw off her Slytherin robe fashionably and stormed to the center of the room.

All the boys and girls now stood in pairs about three feet across from one another. McGonagall began to play music from the gramophone and began instruction on properly addressing oneâs partner. âThe boys begin with a bow⌠followed by the girls responding with a curtsy.â Harry gave a half hearted jerking motion forwards and was met by a contemptuous look from Malfoy who gave an elegant reply. âWe shall cover the basic movements and get everyone a feel for the rhythm of a Waltz. Harry felt clammy. But he also thought that if he could survive one class period as Malfoyâs dance partner, he shouldnât feel nervous with anyone else.
McGonagall had everyone hold an arm out and rotate in imaginary circles to the rhythm of the music. Boys and girls everywhere began turning the wrong ways, tripping over their legs or crashing into one another. Harry tried very hard to focus on his feet and avoid looking at her too directly. Touching her hand was closer than he was already comfortable with. Harry found her hand to be warmer than he wouldâve imagined. Not that he had been imagining holding Malfoyâs hand, but he had guessed wrongly that she might be cold to the touch like a snake.
âOne two three- One two three- One two- Longbottom! Move your feet boy. Donât just stand there. Mr. Weasley, please pay attention to your partner!â McGonagall had easily underestimated the ease with which a smattering of fourth and fifth years could mess up something as simple as walking in circles.
Harry rightly allowed Malfoy to take the lead and she was surprisingly adept. âWhere did you learn this?â Harry muttered to Malfoy. âWhen one is the heiress of a well respected and illustrious Wizarding family, one attends many dances. Theyâre all quite boring really, not like youâd miss an invitation, Potter.â Harry succeeded in avoiding stepping on her feet, but he stumbled over his own fairly frequently. Each time Malfoy would make an over the top laugh, attracting the attention of unwanted spectators from Harryâs perspective. âDo you think they let you on the quidditch team out of pity? Maybe you need me to tell you which foot is left and which one's right?â Harry blushed and felt his forehead begin to perspire as he redoubled his efforts.
He began to look up every ninth note or so and realized that Malfoy was not scowling anymore but seemed to be enjoying herself. She met his gaze and quickly returned to a muted expression. After making twelve or so rotations, Malfoy chinned up and began speaking quietly, âNot as embarrassing as I had expected, Potter. You might not be a hopeless case after all.â Harry had not expected honest flattery from a rival, and it gave a slight stir in his stomach. He was starting to think that he quite enjoyed dancing.
The lesson ended after thirty minutes of drilling when Seamus tumbled over the Gramophone and cut the music. While everyone laughed, McGonagall spoke to them about various rules and expectations of behavior for all students who would be attending the ball. Harry breathed a sigh of relief as he had survived the apparent impossible task of being Malfoyâs partner. She was standing with her arms crossed listening with a strange intensity to McGonagallâs closing statements. She was wearing the usual Slytherin grey sleeveless sweater and a white dress shirt with a green tie. Malfoy always wore it untucked and the white pleats always draped over her dark skirt. It had always seemed to suit her nicely.
Harry suddenly felt the distinct sensation of being watched. Malfoy was looking down on him, not so different than she had accosted Neville previously. Harry tried to look for Ron in the crowd but she continued staring at him as McGonagall wrapped up. Having been dismissed by the professor, Harry glanced back at Malfoy and gave a small but stiff wave, âWell done- erm⌠thanks.â He fought an awkward urge to shake her hand. She coyly bobbed her skirt with her arms out like a ballerina and laughed at him. Harry watched her slowly drape her robe over her shoulders before brushing a strand of hair over her ear. He shook his head and made his way back to his own robe and bag.
Harry was met with Fred and George who could not look any different. George was poking fun at a miserably aloof Fred. George clapped Harry on the back and teasingly curtsied in imitation of Malfoy. âI canât believe you doubted the boy champion Harry Potter like that. It was free money Fred! I wonder what Iâll buy with my ten GalleonsâŚâ George comically prodded his finger to his chin.
âPiss off George. Itâs coming out of Ludo Bagmanâs end anyway, after the lousy git pays up that isâŚâ Fred glowered at Harry, âI took that personally Harry, when have I ever done anything so mean spirited to you?â Harry felt such an outrageous question didnât warrant an answer. âWhereâs Ron?â he asked instead. âRon booked it. Made a fool of himself in front of Susan Bones. Probably hiding under the covers for the next few days. Send him a letter for us will you?â Fred and George left laughing.
âPotter. A word Please.â He was flagged down by McGonagall before he could leave. She approached him with her usual grimace, âMr. Potter. Iâm sure that you are aware of your heightened responsibilities as a Triwizard champion during the Yule Ball?â Harry was used to being asked leading questions about things he didnât know. Neither did he have any patience about guessing. âIâm sorry professor, but no. I wasnât made aware.â She clasped her wrinkled fingers together before continuing, âThe champions and their dance partners, traditionally, are the first pairs to open the ball.â Harry felt that sinking feeling again, âNo professor, I canât really dance. I donât know if-â She waved her hand harshly.
âYou appeared to learn fairly quickly thanks to Miss Malfoy.â Her stern cat-like eyes burned into the back of his head, âAnd I wonât have you disrupt centuries of tradition with a meager and weakly concealed lie, itâs unbefitting of a Gryffindor.â Harry understood there was no avoiding this, much like there was no avoiding a dragon earlier that month. This was a new normal for the boy who lived. âOn the subject of partners, I also strongly urge you to choose wisely. I do not want any poorly chosen characters or flaming tempers disrupting the Ball.â The professor gave Harry a knowing and concerned look.
âOh. Oh! With Malfoy? No professor, that- that was just a bet I lost with Fred and George. Yeah, I would never think to bring her, given our⌠yeah. Got it, Iâll pick a good one then.â McGonagallâs blank stare told Harry she was still unconvinced, but she still told him good day nonetheless. Harry found this to be a silly concern, as he would never think of asking someone as off putting as Dracona Malfoy. Harry rushed outside the classroom hoping to catch his friends leaving, but he noticed a figure from the corner of his eye who had been waiting outside.
It was Malfoy. And she looked angry. She whipped her head and Harry skidded to a halt. âLook, Malfoy, Iâm sorry, okay? It wasnât my idea, I just-â She stuck a finger in his chest and began speaking plainly and commandingly. âIf youâre going to be opening this Ball as a Hogwarts champion, youâre going to make a blustering fool of yourself! And by extension, every British witch and wizard who ever lived.â Harry was surprised but confused as to her intent. âDance lessons every odd day with that loony McGonagall wonât cut it. Youâre to meet with me for proper instruction. And you are to tell NO ONE!â And with that last word she pushed him with her finger and spun around stomping down the corridor. Harry stood in shocked silence and listened to her footsteps trail off and be replaced by the noise of wind through leaves in the courtyard. He veered off in a direction away from the Gryffindor dormitory and was reminded of how today, much like the last few weeks, still felt like a blur.
