I worked at Epic Games for two years. This is real, and the strategy behind it is smarter than most people realize.
Tim Sweeney has spent nearly two decades buying North Carolina forest land. 50,000+ acres across 15 counties. He’s now one of the largest private landowners in the state. The purchases started in 2008, right after the real estate collapse wiped out developers who had been planning golf resorts and luxury communities on biodiverse wilderness.
Sweeney paid $15 million for Box Creek Wilderness, a 7,000-acre stretch in the Blue Ridge foothills containing 130+ rare and threatened species. Developers had owned 5,000 of those acres before the crash. He bought them for conservation prices when nobody else was bidding.
He runs the acquisitions through an LLC called “130 of Chatham.” He buys the land, holds it for years, then either donates it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, sells it at a discount to state parks, or hands it to land trusts. In 2021, he donated 7,500 acres in the Roan Highlands to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Largest private land donation in North Carolina history.
The part people miss: he told the News & Observer that since 2021, land got too expensive to keep buying. So he shifted focus to converting his existing 50,000 acres into permanent conservation status. He’s locking the land into legal structures that make development impossible regardless of who owns it in the future.
A billionaire worth roughly $6 billion is spending tens of millions acquiring wilderness specifically during economic downturns, then giving it away or placing it under permanent legal protection. The land will outlast him, Epic Games, and Fortnite.
That’s the part that separates Sweeney from billionaires who write checks to get their name on a building. The building depreciates. The forest compounds.

Debt traps Americans in a vicious cycle of housing insecurity.
The result is a shortfall of seven million affordable housing units that will require an estimated $300 billion to address.
It’s a herculean imbalance, and the catalyst behind Lane3. “The US is not considered one of the top ‘financially free’ countries in the world,” Lane3 founder Elizabeth “Liz” Kukka (KB9) told Kernel, highlighting systemic exclusion and barriers to capital.
Lane3 is a marketplace that connects affordable housing developers with investors on mutually beneficial terms. They provide crucial bridge financing through transparent, on-chain debt instruments and community staking mechanisms.
It’s the culmination of a story rooted in activism – one that began in public schools and gained form on-chain.

Urging us to ‘thank the rich’ for funding society, creating jobs, and taking risks sounds like a compelling narrative, but with the greatest of respect it massively oversimplifies things.
You obviously claim your post is based on UK data driven truth / let’s see:
1. ‘The top 10% pay 60% of tax. They pay for everything.’
The top 10% did pay 60.3% of UK income tax in 2022-23 (HMRC), but that’s just 27% of total tax revenue. Lower earners bear a heavier burden from VAT and National Insurance (OBR 2023). Meanwhile, the wealthy often hold assets like 4.9 million rental properties (English Housing Survey 2022) or use offshore trusts, costing £5.2 billion in unpaid taxes (HMRC 2021). They contribute a lot, but not 60% - that’s everyone else!
2. ‘They create the jobs.’
Wealthy investors back startups, creating about 500,000 jobs (British Business Bank 2023), but small businesses often not run by ‘the rich’ account for 61% of private-sector jobs (FSB 2023). Public spending supports 5.8 million jobs (ONS 2023), and consumer demand fuels employment too. Yet, the wealthy’s £48 billion in rental income (ONS 2022) often extracts wealth without adding jobs.
3. ‘They take nothing back.’
This doesn’t add up. The rich benefit from the NHS, public transport (£9 billion TfL budget, 2023), and bank bailouts (£137 billion, NAO 2018). Their property investments - 20% of London homes in 2022 - drive up housing costs, taking from communities. Firms like Amazon paid just £14 million in tax on £23 billion revenue (2022), shifting costs to taxpayers.
4. ‘They fund innovation, philanthropy, startups, schools.’
Philanthropy (£12.7 billion, Charities Aid Foundation 2023) and startup funding (£20 billion, Beauhurst 2023) are real contributions. But donations often come with 45% tax breaks (HMRC), and property hoarding - 20% of luxury flats sit empty - fuels inequality, not innovation. Public research (£7 billion UKRI, 2023) often drives bigger breakthroughs. A 1% wealth tax could fund 100,000 nurses yearly (Tax Justice UK).
5. ‘They risk capital, time, reputation.’
Some put £1.2 billion into startups (UKBAA 2023), but property and stocks are safer bets, yielding £48 billion in rent (ONS 2022). Workers faced 1.7 million job losses in 2020-21 (ONS), a bigger risk with less safety net. Much wealth - 44% inherited (ONS 2022) - involves little personal risk.
The bigger picture: The wealthy gain from public systems, then extract wealth through property and tax loopholes. London’s average home price (£550,000, ONS 2023) locks out workers. A 1% wealth tax could raise £22 billion (Tax Justice UK). Let’s appreciate everyone’s contributions - workers, and all taxpayers - and push for a fairer system, not just diff your cap and thank the rich.
Privatization is rot that needs uprooting. It’s marketed as “freedom,” but beneath the hood, it’s absolute control.
🧵…
Capitalism depends on competitive markets, but competitive markets don’t actually require capitalism. And unfortunately, we can’t have real competition when:
Prices have risen steadily since the inception of the United States and will continue to do so, there’s no other way to entrap people. Small business owners are sold the illusion of freedom, independence from working inside the cartel, but you still have zero negotiating power across every sector that matters.
Privatization is the greatest ruse ever perpetrated against “the people.”
What does this amount to?
Cartel-like control. Everyday people don’t have real options—“competition” is reduced to a few dollars in price differences while prices keep rising because there is no meaningful market pressure.
Why does this happen? Limited regulation and captured regulators.
