For 27 years, every parent in Minnesota knew one name. Jacob.
On Sunday night, October 22, 1989, 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling, his 10-year-old brother Trevor and their friend Aaron biked to a convenience store in St. Joseph, Minnesota, to rent a movie. On the dark road home, a masked man with a gun stepped out of a driveway.
He made the boys lie in the ditch. He told Trevor to run into the woods and not look back. Then Aaron. He kept Jacob.
Police, the FBI and the National Guard searched. Thousands of tips poured in. Jacob's face was on posters across the country. Nothing.
His parents, Patty and Jerry, didn't hide. Four months later they started a foundation for child safety. In 1994, Congress passed the Jacob Wetterling Act, the first law requiring states to keep sex-offender registries.
The answer came in pieces. Investigators linked DNA from a January 1989 attack on another boy, Jared Scheierl, in nearby Cold Spring, to a local man, Danny Heinrich. A search of his home led to his arrest in 2015 on federal child pornography charges.
On September 1, 2016, Heinrich led investigators to a pasture near Paynesville, about 30 miles away. Jacob had been found. Five days later, in court, Heinrich confessed to taking and killing him the night he vanished. He was sentenced to 20 years, the maximum on the plea.
"Jacob has been found and our hearts are broken," Patty said.
The case is solved. Jacob's light stayed on. Today his headstone reads: Jacob's Hope Lives.

This is his second time at the shelter. His history is unlear. He has been social and friendly with handlers but has shown intense leash biting that has made safely removing him from the kennel for walks difficult. He has been hard to redirect with treats or toys. There was one incident where he grabbed a handlerโs hand during leashing (did not break skin). Medically he is apparently healthy.
