When people constantly portray cyclists as law-breaking nuisances, it can encourage drivers to see every cyclist as a problem rather than a person sharing the road. That can affect how much space they're given, how closely they're overtaken and how patiently drivers behave.

The helmet argument is particularly frustrating because not wearing a helmet doesn't make someone fair game for abuse or dangerous driving. In Britain, adult cycle helmets aren't compulsory.

Of course, cyclists who jump red lights or endanger pedestrians deserve criticism for those specific actions. But blaming an entire group for the behaviour of some is generic.
