Listen, it’s not just Jenrick & the Reform lot who’ve completely lost their heads & are embracing mass murder as policy. It’s a media & political discourse that was completely inevitably bound for this place. Step by step it happens. When Braverman decreed it, the entire media switched from calling people asylum seekers to calling them “illegal immigrants”. That was a choice that each of them made, referring to the same people. Step by step they chose which crimes to report on, & which statistics to ignore. Step by step we allowed even supposedly progressive parties to model themselves on Trump, on family deportations & mass accommodation sites in disused barracks. Step by step we normalised neo Nazi black short monsters as “protesters with legitimate concerns”. Now it’s lethal force & pundits are pretending to be surprised.

Pay attention to ongoing byepolls in Bengal: they are an excellent example of India's democratic decline. In Nandigram, ruling party is near hegemonic. Opposition is either in jail, defected to the BJP or simply not contesting. Voters are threatened with stoppage of welfare if they don't vote BJP. Voters are faced with a one-party election, reports @AnantGuptaAG. scroll.in/article/1096176/on…

Humanities and social sciences compel confrontation between the conscience of humanity with the society (its ills) it resides in. This confrontation is important! No apologies for quoting the cliche; here is Einstein on the importance of humanities in STEM:
I deeply believe that sociology/ humanities have no place in any institutions of STEM.

I thought this could be a World Cup defined by arrival of top club managers into international game, a higher tactical bar etc. But Poch, Ancelotti and Tuchel all had disastrous exits. And who’s left standing at the end? Scaloni and De la Fuente, the international specialists!

Messi will be the best footballer till the day he retires. He is the greatest expression of footballing genius on the pitch.

This is on Tuchel. Parking the bus with Konsa at that stage is insane.

One of my favourite players of the Emirates era. A magician - who lit up the football pitch whenever he stepped onto it. What a career, what a story of resilience. Enjoy your retirement @19SCazorla - hopefully we see you back at Arsenal soon.

Seeing loads of such nonsense all day on this platform. Great example of herd mentality which doesn't require any critical thinking skills. You don't have to like Arsenal and Arteta. Please watch the other 19 teams who are playing such lovely football every single week.
Can't remember the last time I saw so many rival fans dislike a team as much as this Arsenal side. There is almost nothing to like, from manager to playing style to on-field antics. Imagine that much talent, and spending that much money, only to choose to play like this!

The audacity of Jim Ratcliffe, a British billionaire who migrated to Monaco to avoid paying taxes, but was trying to get UK taxpayer money to enable his stadium project, saying this. Using ‘colonised’ when actual British colonialism resulted in over 100 million Indian deaths between 1881-1920 alone, transportation of 3.5 million African slaves, and an endless array of other atrocities with the impact still being felt today. And when the success of Manchester United, on the field and commercially, is in large part dependent on foreigners. Vile, vile, vile.

The Benfica GK scoring in the final minute against Real Madrid to keep his team alive in the UCL is insane. 🤯

Hamnet is so so good. It is one of the most emotionally honest films I have watched for some time.

🧵Who is Francesca Orsini? Many people here have expressed ignorance about her work. Lets change that. Her google scholar profile mentions that she has 2500+ academic citations. That’s over two thousand published journal articles or academic books referencing her work.1/n
I have no views on this scholar Francesca Orsini. Had never heard of her. But those of us from a rooted background, who speak Hindi at home, read Hindi books as well, can only roll our eyes at this rather bizarre claim that 'few have shaped our understanding' of Hindi literary culture like a British SOAS Prof! 🙄
