Did you know Portage Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie has a connection to the city's early transportation history?
Long before the Soo Locks existed, Indigenous peoples and later fur traders used overland portage routes to carry boats and cargo around the rapids of the St. Marys River. The name Portage Avenue likely reflects this historic practice, with portions of the street following or running near these early routes.
When the first American Soo Lock opened in 1855, boats gained a new way to bypass the rapids, but the history of portaging remains part of the Soo's story!
Next time you're traveling down Portage Avenue, think about the centuries of history behind its name!
Jodi and I planned the perfect fall day trip from the Soo, and we obviously had to test it out ourselves. Read about our adventure and steal our itinerary for your next fall day trip here!
