The targeted building was not an illegal migrant hotel. Northumbria Police said the disorder was pre-arranged and related to misinformation that the building would be used as an HMO - which is not accurate. The site is planned for use as a supermarket.

Ireland has seen its worst unrest in years, driven by anger over immigration and asylum housing.
In June, riots broke out across Belfast, Portadown, Derry and Newtownabbey after a knife attack on a disabled man. Masked rioters torched homes, cars and businesses, going door to door trying to identify immigrant families.
In Dublin, protests turned violent outside the Citywest complex after an asylum seeker awaiting deportation was accused of sexually assaulting a child. A police van was set alight and officers were pelted with bricks and fireworks.
IPAS accommodation held roughly 33,250 people at the end of 2025, a 450% rise since 2021.
The Irish have had enough, and they've made that clear.
