At first I was surprised by how badly this film failed in my country. It was one of the year's biggest flops. But in retrospect, it's understandable. Old Godzilla films are seen as trashy schlock, so the return of classic monsters was actually kind of a turn-off to some people.
Godzilla looking too much like the "shitty old ones" was already a recurring complaint with the 2014 film, which also under-performed and got horrible reviews. KOTM doubling down on paying homage to old films that were never released here made it even less appealing to audiences.
Finally more info on Godzilla Minus Zero's Hungarian release. Looks like it won't be dubbed. Pretty odd, considering Hungary is a dubbing nation. This means Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla still remains the only Hungarian-dubbed Japanese Godzilla film to be ever shown in theaters.
A subtitled release might be a blessing, given how rough the Hungarian Netflix dub of Minus One was in places. It does make me slightly concerned for the film's box office prospects, as most viewers likely won't care for subs, but I never expected the film to do well here anyway.
Onewa's personality is abrasive; he always says what's on his mind to belittle others. Since he already got over this fault in the previous film, WoS doesn't really know what to do with him. His toxicity was transferred to Matau, so Onewa inherited Matau's comic relief role.
