"Our government needs to invest adequately and develop the care workforce. The rest of us working in care—whether we identify as health or social care professionals—must campaign ardently until they do." via @adamgordon1978 @AndrewElder in @bmj_latest bmj.com/content/381/bmj.p861

Something I rarely see mentioned is that in many areas adult social care is the biggest single source of employment, bigger than the NHS, and the money spent on employing people in social care returns to those local economies.

I’ve been thinking on continued failure of the NHS to share records with patients. I think it’s important & will change the nature of healthcare interactions. These 2 things can be true: it’s too busy for such a big change & it’s important to do. If not now, then when?

Last month, BBC reported that GOSH, a research hospital in the UK, base edited the genome of a 12-year-old girl, Alyssa, suffering from leukemia. She had failed dozens of therapies and had no more options. Seven months later, she is cancer- free. Not many investors know about it.

Shortage of homecare is having a substantial impact on the wider health and care system. Years of under-funding at a time of growing demographic pressures have led to this. Improvements are possible with appropriate investment in workforce & tech. lancasterguardian.co.uk/news…

We're putting an end to compulsory mask wearing in care homes in time for Christmas. I hope this means thousands more people in care will get to see a smile this winter: gov.uk/government/news/mask-…

Today's @HLAdultCare #socialcare report is a huge 148-page effort, with 685 references, 8 pages of witnesses and 30 recommendations. It says many sensible things and is especially strong on the voice of carers and people who draw on services. A thread... committees.parliament.uk/com…

'It was felt that assessments...had a biased emphasis on the physical & practical aspects of care. In other words, there are many within Local Authorities who have come to believe that if you get someone up in the morning, toilet them & feed them, then their duty.. is fulfilled.'

I struggle to “get” what is social care exactly, seems a catch all for any care not provided by a healthcare professional, but I can’t help thinking it’s a convenient label to justify not have universal funding for long-term care in England (unlike in other high-income countries) – at Canterbury, England

Modest medical breakthrough that might partially delay onset of Alzheimer's, hugely expensive to roll out: blanket coverage, excitement, positivity Proven ways to improve the wellbeing of people living with dementia via social care: this is a HUGE cost, who will pay for it?
