After reading/watching many different lores on Dracaena Malfoid, these are Night Haunter's thoughts on what the "official" Dracaena Malfoid cannon should be, at its core. I go into more detail on the later books when there is more divergence from JK Rowling's canon. Before though, SectumSempra creates the ultimate redemption arc and makes for a significantly better story. It is required. The best Malfoid lore arc is as follows: Books 1-3: Similar to original, except Malfoid starts to develop a crush on Harry, built on an increasing grudging respect of the boy who dared refuse her friendship. She initially hates him, as a spoiled child would - and she clearly communicates that dislike repeatedly - as is currently canon. Thus, Harry's impression of Dracaena Malfoy is that she hates him. Harry never notices anything more because, as in lore, he is a typically obtuse boy. Book 4: Going to Yule Ball on a bet from George and Fred. Malfoid surprisingly accepts & teaches Harry to dance. For the first time, Harry sees her differently. Malfoid enjoys Harry not hating her. The balcony scene occurs. They have a spark. Book 5: Tension grows as Voldemort returns. Malfoid works with Umbridge. Harry & Cho's short romance building is replaced with Harry & Malfoid. Harry sees Malfoid hanging out with a bad crowd. But he believes there's more to her. He stays close to her as he's able, pursuing her, trying to bring her to the good side out of care for her. He wants to believe she's secretly good. That the bad acts aren't who she truly is. Book 6: Malfoid is ordered to kill Dumbledore. Harry finds out she is a Death Eater. He is crushed - he thought he could save her. By SectumSempra, he has given up. She has not. He casts the spell. Malfoid thinks he did it on purpose and becomes convinced Harry hates her. Her heart breaks. She weakly asks, "Do you hate me that much?" and passes out. Harry tries to tell her it was an accident, but Malfoid cannot hear/understand him due to blood loss. Snape rushes in and saves her life. They separate - seemingly for good. Book 7: Malfoid refuses to identify Harry after he's hauled into Malfoy Manor, even though Malfoid recognizes him - and Harry knows she did. Harry has a spark of doubt about her. He begins to think maybe there's still some good in her, though he is repulsed by what she's doing and what he believes she has become. He does not realize the agony she is in being walked down this path. He does not realize she has fallen in love with him. Later, he saves her from the fire, but does not try to reconcile. Malfoid thought he did it out of love. Her heart lept. But then he leaves her - showing there was no more to it than his noble nature. Malfoid is crushed again. She knows it's truly over between them. Despite her refusing to identify him, he still appears to hate her. Finally, ultimate redemption happens. Voldemort and Harry are dueling. Voldemort is winning. Harry is driven to one knee. His head droops. As Harry is about to lose the duel and die, Dracaena Malfoy rushes to him, breaking ranks with the Death Eaters. Harry does not see her coming. He feels her cool hand take his and pour her magic into the fight. He looks up and sees her. Harry finally realizes that she's chosen the good side. He realizes she chose him over everything. He realizes she loves him. He understands. His heart soars. His energy renewed. He gets back up. She asks, "Scared Potter?" Harry looks back and says, "Not as long as you're with me." Together, they begin pushing back Voldemort's spell. He tries to overcome them, but he cannot. Together, they force the killing spell back into him. Together, Harry Potter and Dracaena Malfoid kill Voldemort. They slowly look at each other and both feel True Love. They kiss. The entire school erupts in applause. The ultimate line is narrated, "Voldemort was first defeated by a love he could never understand, and he was ultimately defeated by a love he could never extinguish."
