Hands・Some — 1 Biodome — 人工的自然庭園のための音楽 1993年、スパイラル／ワコールアートセンターのレーベルNewsicから『Hands・Some — Ojima with International Characters』をリリースしました。 それまで僕が作ってきた環境音楽は、スパイラルをはじめ実際に存在する場所のための音楽でした。 そこで、まだ存在しない場所や状況、未来のライフスタイルを想像してそのための音楽を作ってみようと思いました。 そのひとつが、 「Biodome — Music for Artificial Natural Gardens」 です。当時、日本に自然の生態系を人工的に再現する「バイオドーム」という施設を作る計画があり、実現したら音楽を作ってほしいと相談されていました。 でも、その計画は実現しませんでした。 それなら、と。 まだ存在しないバイオドームのための環境音楽を作っておきました。 St.GIGAから提供してもらった水の音や、人工的に作られた鳥の声を使い、途中にはMacのために開発された極初期の音声合成ソフト「Smooth Talker」による英語のナレーションが入ります。 語られるのは、地球に生命が誕生し長い時間をかけて進化してきたこと。そして、人間が自然環境とどのように関わってきたかという解説です。 架空のバイオドームを訪れた人たちに、その場所の成り立ちを案内するような音声として組み込みました。 33年後、『Hands・Some』がWRWTFWW RecordsのESPLANADE SERIESから、初めてアナログ盤としてリイシューされます。 存在しなかった場所のために作った音楽は、33年後もまだそこにあります。 Yoshio Ojima Hands・Some — Ojima with International Characters WRWTFWW Records / ESPLANADE wereleasewhateverthefuckwewa… @WRWTFWW

The title Rendez-vous sounds a little different now, 35 years later. In his new liner notes, Masaaki Hara describes the album not only as the moment when Satsuki Shibano stepped into a new form of expression, but also as “the beginning of the collaboration between Shibano and Ojima that continues to this day.” From Rendez-vous to Hands・Some. And then to Caresse. And further still, to the present. Perhaps encountering a work again after 35 years is not about returning to the past, but about rediscovering a passage of time that is still unfolding. Rendez-vous, anew. Out now. In 1991, we described Rendez-vous as: “A borderless world of sound, spanning Satie to Comelade.” And now, 35 years later. WRWTFWW Records describes the album as: “Forward-thinking.” Electronica, ambient pop, neoclassical, house, contemporary jazz… At the time, we weren’t consciously trying to cross between these genres. We simply brought together the sounds we found interesting, without worrying about existing boundaries, and placed them within a single work. 35 years later, that music is being heard again—in another place, by another generation of listeners, and described in a new language.
