The newly installed Tooro Kingdom monarch, Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has raised concern over the growing burden of cancer after revealing that the disease has claimed the lives of his predecessor, the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, and two royal cousins.
The King made the remarks while attending Sabbath prayers with members of the Seventh-day Adventist community in Fort Portal, where he highlighted the need for greater cancer awareness, early diagnosis and improved access to treatment.
Edward also announced plans for the Omukama's Birthday Run, scheduled for December 19, 2026, to raise funds towards establishing a cancer treatment centre in the Tooro region.
His remarks come nearly two months after Oyo IV died at the age of 34 on August 27, 2026, in the United States following a battle with angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
The proposed cancer treatment centre is expected to help improve access to specialised care for patients in Tooro and surrounding areas.
