Not only is it okay to say the word 'retarded,' now, but you can raise $60M for a product for special ed / at-risk populations incapable of forming the most basic human relationships to be able to get on the phone with friends and family.
Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you. Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet. The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations. This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year. Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m. To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)

America doesn't have a revolutionary culture, it's just a LARP. People in France set buildings on fire over a 1% tax increase while Americans just kinda watch as the state abducts people off the street.

Americans should keep quiet and not give their opinions on what’s happening in France. France is the country of Émile Zola and Victor Hugo, of the Commune and the Yellow Vests. You are the country of obese people, of KFC, and your hero is SpongeBob. Worry about the Strait of Hormuz that you closed.

I'm in my mid 50s. My peers deserve all the horrible things that will happen to them. We raise kids in a village. Of course we are here for our grandkids 24/7. This is you-will-die-alone-without-anyone-visiting-you-for-the-last-3-years-of-your-life slop.

3 minutes and 60 cents on 30 gallons. That's almost 20 bucks while I'm there any way.
I don’t think I’m ever going to understand the people who will wait in a line for 15 minutes to save 20 cents a gallon on gas at Costco

The @UseCorgi guy brought back the 1980s trope of Wall Street IR girls and put them in 2020s San Francisco and the internet lost its mind. Marketing maxim: Don't invent something new. Change something old a tiny bit and put it in a new time and you'll win the day.

Corgi is giving immaculate Zenefits.
Cancel culture is alive and well, but, at Corgi, we have thick skin and believe strongly in freedom of expression. For those who don’t know us, Corgi is an increasingly diversified financial institution, best known for our insurance products and generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue more quickly than any other financial services company before us. Our approach is simple: find parts of financial services that are slow, expensive, manual, or broken, and use technology to make them faster, better, and cheaper, while protecting people and companies when things go wrong. While it’s easy to focus on our (comparably small, our marketing team is around ~10 people) marketing efforts, the entire team consists of real heroes that have allowed us to scale faster than any other financial services company in history by offering good products that save people money, save them time, and protect them when things go wrong. If I’ve learned one thing about startups, it’s that VCs and very online figures care mostly about press and social media. However, real hackers and builders care about making a durable business, and that’s what we’re doing at Corgi. And to all the people trying constantly to get me to fire our team members for expressing themselves online: it’s not going to happen, and no, there aren’t KPIs tied to social media presence at corgi currently, we just haven’t censored our team historically nor are we going to start now. It’s a great thing that our team consists of culturally important figures who share their opinions, and companies would generally be more ambitious if they did not attempt to censor their team and revert to corporate slop.

We have a black sporty sedan as one of the 4 cars in the household. It's fantastic. Yes, it was dicontinued. Everytime I see another driver in a black sporty sedan I smile.
In 2005, a new Ford F-150 (base model) cost about $22,000. It was a utilitarian work tool with vinyl bench seats and manual windows, bought by tradesmen and contractors to haul tools to job sites. Today, the average full size pickup truck is an $85,000 luxury living room on wheels. Heated and ventilated leather seats, 360 degree parking cameras, and 15 inch digital dashboard displays. To afford them, buyers are signing longer term loans than ever before. Automakers figured out a goldmine a decade ago. They canceled product of midsize sedan lineups because the margins were thin, then rebranded rugged blue collar utility as the ultimate suburban status symbol. I cannot tell you how many truck commercials I have seen while watching a sporting event, it's truly insane. Now, millions of households carry $1,000 plus a month in vehicle overheated for a high riding commuter car that will never carry a sheet of drywall or see a dirt road. Instead, it's parked in a suburban driveway making daily trips to an office park and the local Costco.

Living a life of such quiet desperation you have to go no-Novicaine just to feel something in your life.
Sequoia partner Doug Leone reveals he got a root canal with no Novocaine to see if he was really a badass "I had to get a root canal. And I had to go to a meeting right after that. I told the dentist, drill without any Novocaine.” “My whole life, I wanted to see if I was a badass or not. Am I a fake badass that has this envelope nobody could tell, or am I really a badass on the inside?" "He drilled and I jumped. And I told the dentist, I won't move again. And I didn't move again. I used the trick of thinking what it must be like to go to war and lose an arm or two legs. That's pain with consequences. Mine was pain with no consequences." “It’s just nerve endings from there to my brain to my spine, f*ck it I’m not moving.” "I had to go home and change my shirt because I was a puddle of sweat. But I didn't move. And so I love fear. It does wonders for me."

Also wildfire resistant and insurable, on top of everything else.
Our Family Home in Santa Barbara - Classic Courtyard Home George Washington Smith designed this home, and he was a Master at giving real life…..a place to dwell. Simple forms, that grow out of the site they are in. Courtyards to hold the life. Thick walls and arches to rest a soul up to. Levels to wander, not full flights of stairs. Living in a house made for living, is called …. “A Home”. Let’s stop wasting energy making houses and apartments people think they want, and start making homes for people to live a Life. #architecture #design #santabarbara

Every couple of months a crazy VC has a day on Twitter and I always check how many times they've been divorced. It's always at least 2 and I'm 3:0.

I thought it was: - pedophilia - serial rape - incest - genocide - torture but I guess it's not returning a shopping cart and littering?
signs you’re a bottom tier member of society: - littering - cutting in line - not returning your shopping cart - not saying thank you when someone holds the door - parking in a handicap spot when you don’t need one - carving your name into or graffitiing nature - wearing pajamas to the airport - passing your pet off as a service animal - being rude to service workers - lying/stealing/cheating

A friend of mine sold a big industrial business in 2008 for more than $100M and in 2009 bought $500M (at 2005 values) of industrial real estate for that $100M. He now sits on well over a billion dollars in real estate.
The only way to buy real estate at true scale is if you’re willing to overpay.
