Maybe building our entire economy around services wasn’t a good idea. But at least we can pivot to physical AI in manufacturing & data centre buildout with our cheap energy and permissive planning system
🚨NEW: Barclays is to cut 5,000 jobs that will be replaced by AI, saving almost 60% of its costs in supporting roles

Preaching across the divide:
The English choral tradition is central to the nation's cultural heritage. How can we safeguard it for future generations? As I wrote this morning for the @Telegraph, by empowering the Parish Church. (Link below)

Every institution, every single one, now seems to be controlled by an enemy of the West. I think the least that should be asked is that the individuals who are engaged in this frenzy of destruction be named. Who desecrated the Kelvingrove in this way, and who appointed her?

How is it that Egypt, a country with pretty fragile state capacity, can record who leaves the country but Britain says it would be impossible?

Can you still talk about “pre-emptive strikes” after a war has begun?
BREAKING | 🇺🇸🇮🇷🇮🇱‼️‼️ The Trump administration may have shifted toward supporting a preemptive military strike against Iran in the past several hours, according to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, raising fears that a new confrontation could be approaching. Citing White House sources, Haaretz reports that the possible change in Washington’s position is largely linked to intelligence assessments and security briefings presented to President Donald Trump by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The information was reportedly delivered after Hegseth returned from a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The report suggests a significant shift in the administration’s internal deliberations, although no final decision to launch military operations has been publicly confirmed. The reported shift is particularly significant amid Netanyahu’s increasingly explicit calls for the overthrow of Iran’s regime and warnings from Tehran that it would respond offensively to any attack. American support for a preemptive strike would dramatically increase the risk of a wider regional war, potentially drawing US forces directly into hostilities. The central question is now whether Washington’s reported change in position will translate into military action or remain part of an escalating campaign of pressure against Tehran. Trafalgar has disappeared from the national consciousness because the British are ashamed of martial prowess unless it is in service to a) someone else or b) a postwar abstract ideal like Democracy or Human Rights.

Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

The great humanitarian only killed a million people, give or take.
Witkoff to Putin: “He is a 75-year-old-man and you talk so much about about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian, you are a humanitarian also sir, and I salute that.”

Never go full Galloway.
Holy shit, Witkoff just called Putin a "humanitarian." "You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian. You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that, I commend you, and I thank you again." Because of Putin, thousands of Ukrainian civilians are dead, hospitals lie in ruins, and people are suffering from hunger, torture and Russian terrorism.

This afternoon we are at the Cave Churches, which serve the Christian community of ‘garbage city’. To get to it we have driven through this desperately poor area, where so many Copts find their only employment is sifting through rubbish by hand

Never think liturgical churches can’t be mega. This church holds 20,000 - and there are others inside the rock. There is something unbelievably powerful about the strength of the commitment of these Christians to Christ.

They also have a church dedicated to the best-named Evangelist which serves as their winter / wet weather church. It only holds 2000 people. It’s amazing to think that 50 years ago there were no churches in Garbage City. This all emerged from one man who started evangelising his fellow rubbish-pickers after reading Isaiah 19. They were all Christian but there were no churches there at all. Now there are seven, including the mega-church!

Philippe (mainstream Right) had basically been running 50:50 with Le Pen in polling for the second round of next Spring's presidential election until now, and Attal (centrist) within a few points. But the post-riots polling is absolutely horrendous. As it always is, after riots.
LFI strategy being touted as The Thing seems very odd in current context. If we can summarise LFI's praxis as a "strategy of conflict", adopting Radical™️ positions in order to "shift the debate"/"move the paradigm", then the net effect = rallying ~15% of your core base (radicalised urban precariat + downwardly mobile grads + BAME voters) in the 1st round.... only to mobilise 68% of the country behind MARINE LE PEN in the 2nd round because two thirds of the country finds your politics absolutely repellent🤪🤪 Mélenchon is a supremely charismatic leader in that very Gallic tradition. But LFI's stance –– when it was centred around a more universalist Left republicanism (i.e. in 2017), with retention of laïcité & more bread-and-butter workerist emphases –– had a far broader potential. (Mélenchon himself began to soften various policy stances when it became clear he might make the 2nd round in 2017). That has been abandoned in favour of radical ideas around "créolisation", total embrace of IdPol & foreign policy radicalism etc. An LFI-dominated NFP parliamentary grouping had success in the 2024 elections precisely because it adopted a focused minimum programme with softened EU/geopolitical positions in alliance with PS/Greens/PCF etc. –– i.e. NOT by adopting maximalist, controversial, unpopular stances in order to "shift the debate" leftwards.

In what way is the ‘market rent’ not that which a person is willing to buy at which the owner is willing to accept?
The rent was reduced to a market rent. That's all the tribunal system does. Enough with the hysterics. This does not meet any reasonable definition of rent control. It's a form of mediation for landlords & tenants. Most landlords are fine with it. Just want proper resourcing.
