Wondering what the CLARITY Act means for the future of blockchain technology? While it is a welcome attempt to bring structure and certainty to digital asset regulation in the United States - in its current form, it approaches blockchain almost exclusively from a financial and market perspective, without consideration of the wider potential. With blockchain being increasingly used as data infrastructure for large-scale utility, it doesn't take into account applications such as: ►Decentralised Identifiers (DIDs) for identity, credentials, and access control ►Digital Product Passports to meet traceability, sustainability, and compliance requirements ►Sensor and IoT data anchored on-chain for auditability, safety, and liability attribution ►Tamper-evident records for regulatory reporting, compliance logs, and enterprise systems ►Machine-to-machine interactions, where tokens function as usage rights or access controls rather than financial assets When regulation fails to recognise these functions, it risks creating legal uncertainty for enterprises using blockchain purely to record, verify, or reference data. As the CLARITY Act continues through the legislative process, we're calling on lawmakers and regulators to explicitly recognise non-financial blockchain applications - distinguishing utility and data infrastructure from investment and trading activity, and ensuring that compliance-focused, enterprise use cases are not unintentionally hindered by financial regulation.
