ALT We are dismayed that the government appears to have concrete plans for a White Paper on SEND when it has not spoken to young people, families or SEND charities. Reforms based on cutting short term costs and reducing children's rights will only make the current dire situation worse. They will lead to even more young people living without the education they need and will end up costing the public finances more in the long term. Children can only succeed with a well-trained workforce; properly inclusive schools; schools, the NHS and councils working together; and robust quality assurance and accountability for families when things go wrong. Without these the Government risks creating barriers to opportunities rather than removing them, as it promised.

Member logos at the bottom. Text reads: "Response from Chief Executives of the Lead DCP organisations to the ISOS report on Special Educational Needs and Disability – 25th July 2024 Taking away families’ legal rights would only risk more children and their families being failed, because these rights are an essential safeguard when nothing else has worked. What Government should do is give schools the right skills and enough money to be able to support the 1.7 million children in England with special educational needs. Until they do that, thousands of children will fail to learn and many will be unable to go to school at all."
