The principle is straightforward: security mechanisms need to be designed so that they can evolve as threats, technology, and cryptography change. The implementation is anything but straightforward. Consider post-quantum cryptography. Replacing today's asymmetric cryptography is not simply a matter of exchanging one algorithm for another. Key sizes and computational requirements change dramatically. In an industrial machine containing potentially hundreds of individually licensed functions, that has profound architectural consequences. Then comes the second challenge: migration. Wibu-Systems customers already operate millions of license containers in the field. Moving that installed base toward post-quantum mechanisms therefore requires a transition path that preserves existing operations while introducing a new cryptographic foundation. Industrial cybersecurity has to evolve continuously. Operating systems change. Security requirements change. Cryptographic algorithms change. And the technologies protecting software and digital assets need a migration path that keeps pace with all of them. Post-quantum cryptography makes that challenge particularly clear. Larger keys, different computational requirements, and potentially many protected functions inside a single machine mean that manufacturers cannot simply replace one cryptographic algorithm with another and assume the job is done. What is needed instead is cryptographic agility: an architecture designed to accommodate new mechanisms, secure updates, and evolving trust models throughout the lifecycle of the protected software. In the interview, Oliver explains how Wibu-Systems is preparing the CodeMeter ecosystem for this transition and why planning for future cryptographic requirements has to start well before quantum computing becomes an immediate operational threat.
