Preparing for the Storm — In the Air and in the Hearing Room @GBSinSA
As I was packing for my flight to Cape Town this week, the weather alerts kept coming in: severe storms, heavy rain, strong winds. The kind of weather that makes you rethink your outfit, your timing, and your entire plan. My suit jacket went back into the cupboard, replaced with a knee‑length rain jacket — not because I wanted to, but because the conditions demanded it.
And it struck me how similar this is to the work we do in employment law.
Every hearing, every arbitration, every disciplinary process has its own “weather system.” Sometimes it’s calm and predictable. Other times, it’s turbulent, emotional, or legally complex. And just like preparing for a stormy landing in Cape Town, success depends on preparation that is practical, intentional, and responsive to the conditions.
