아빠는 내가 중학교 1학년 때 재혼하셨음
솔직히 처음에는 새엄마가 너무 싫었음

학교 끝나고 집에 오면 간식도 만들어 주시고

그런데 나는 새엄마를 단 한 번도 엄마라고 부른 적이 없었음
그냥 아줌마라고 불렀음
한번은 친구들이 집에 놀러 왔다가
새엄마를 보고 우리 엄마냐고 물어본 적이 있음
그때 내가 바로 대답했음
“아니, 우리 엄마 아니야”
새엄마가 바로 옆에서 듣고 계셨는데
아무렇지 않게 웃으면서 과일을 깎아주셨음
지금 생각하면 그때 얼마나 속상하셨을까 싶음
고등학교 2학년 때는 아빠랑 크게 싸운 적도 있었음
새엄마가 내 생일이라고 미역국을 끓여주셨는데
내가 한 숟가락도 안 먹고 방에 들어가 버렸거든
아빠가 왜 그러냐고 화를 내시길래
“내 엄마도 아닌데 왜 자꾸 엄마처럼 굴어?”

그때 새엄마가 아빠를 말리면서 그러셨음

그날 밤 화장실에 가려고 나왔다가

“내가 너무 욕심부렸나 봐”
“그냥 밥 잘 챙겨 먹고 건강하게만 크면 되는데”
그 말을 듣고도 모른 척 방으로 들어갔음
그렇게 대학에 가고 군대까지 다녀왔음
군대에 있을 때도 새엄마는 매달 편지를 보내셨고
휴가 나올 때마다 내가 좋아하는 음식들을 잔뜩 해놓으셨음
전역하고 취업해서 독립한 뒤에도 마찬가지였음
새엄마는 내가 퇴근할 시간쯤 되면 가끔 연락하셨음
“밥은 먹었니?”
“날씨 추운데 따뜻하게 입고 다녀”
나는 늘 짧게 대답했음
“네”
“알겠어요”
그렇게 새엄마와 함께한 세월이 어느새 15년이 넘었음
그러다가 지난주에 아빠 생신이라 본가에 내려갔음
새엄마가 아침부터 음식을 준비하고 계셨는데
주방에 들어가 보니 손가락에 밴드를 붙이고 계시더라
왜 그러냐고 물었더니
갈비찜 재료를 손질하다가 조금 베였다고 하셨음
