The church is a community of believers following Jesus, both individually & corporately. This is the heart of discipleship.
Discipleship should be the engine driving the church forward in its God-given purpose.

Consider what is most important to you. My family is my most valuable living legacy on earth. People I’ve been privileged to lead, disciple, & serve are the next most important... That kind of investment is invaluable...

Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. (2 Timothy 2:23)

Jesus was clear about what His Father’s will was for His life. The disciples tried to impose their priorities upon the Lord. The woman at the well seems more connected to what mattered to Jesus than His disciples.

If ministry in small towns and rural areas is so important, why are they so often overlooked? And how can we start re-focusing our attention where it matters? My conversation with Charles Cotherman centers around his new book, Strip Mine Jesus: Hope for the Rural Church, Small Towns, and Overlooked Places.
Even if you live in a heavily populated area, like I do, you can gain a lot from Charlie’s book and this conversation.

Solomon sees a more redemptive view of work than many of us might have... here he says people should see work as a gift from God and to “… find satisfaction in their work.”
Solomon based this on a simple trust in God.

It's easy to get so focused on ourselves that we can't see what's going on around us. Focusing on ourselves also blinds us to the needs of others. The disciples of Jesus had this problem, as we do today.

Reading the end of Ecclesiastes chapter 2... the last few verses hold a surprise.
Solomon gives a reason to find satisfaction in life through our work. He also gives an optimistic perspective on what we see as a legacy...

Have we become followers of what’s popular rather than Jesus?
Are we any different from Israel during the days of the kings & prophets?
If so, it is a far cry from what God intends...
Denying ourselves & dying to self...

David had failures. Big ones. He committed adultery. He ordered a man's death. He made mistakes as a father and a king. But he never stopped running back to God.
Solomon had wisdom, wealth, and a temple built to God's glory. Yet somewhere along the way, he settled for knowing about God rather than truly knowing Him.
The devotional question that stays with you: Don't be caught as a Solomon instead of a David. Pursue God's heart, not just God's blessings.

Over the years, my wife & I were partners in many ministries & invested much time, energy, & love in these endeavors & in people. As the Lord led us to new ways to serve Him, we had to let go of what was & embrace the new.

Solomon explained... A wise person observes what he sees and walks in the light of his understanding. But a fool is oblivious to what is around him. He lacks understanding and walks in his own darkness.

When our life's priorities center on ourselves, they become selfish & limited. When our priority is God’s, we’ll be free from the worry of what we’ll eat, drink, or wear. What's the focus of your life’s priorities?
