Every night at Compline, the last prayer of the day, the Church sings the words of the aged Simeon as he held the Christ Child in his arms. “Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; because my eyes have seen thy salvation… a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” Hear more of the Sisters’ chant on our first album, Lumen, out January 15. 💿 Pre-order now and download two chants instantly sistersofaquinas.bandcamp.co…

This is Papyrus P52, dated to the 2nd century AD. It is one of the earliest surviving manuscripts of the New Testament, containing portions of John 18, where Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate. A plain English rendering of the passage, with missing words restored: “Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ ‘What is truth?’ Pilate asked.”

Some amazing news. 🇨🇦 Belleville Police Const. Jeff Smith has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home after being shot while confronting a gunman outside a synagogue during Yom Kippur. We’re wishing Const. Smith continued strength and a full recovery, and we’re grateful for his courage and the bravery of the officers who responded that day.

Great to see the news from our 🇬🇧 British Allies on a strong commitment to defense spending in their new budget. These investments are a core part of stepping up so together we can face and deter evolving threats to our freedoms.

“Now and then I am asked as to ‘what books a statesman should read,’ and my answer is, poetry and novels – including short stories under the head of novels. I don’t mean that he should read only novels and modern poetry. If he cannot also enjoy the Hebrew prophets and the Greek dramatists, he should be sorry. He ought to read interesting books on history and government, and books of science and philosophy; and really good books on these subjects are as enthralling as any fiction ever written.” - Theodore Roosevelt

This is the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, dated to the late 200s AD. It is the earliest known Christian hymn manuscript with both lyrics and musical notation. A plain English rendering of the surviving words: “Let all creation be silent. Let the shining stars be still. Let the rushing winds and rivers cease. While we sing to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, let every power answer: Amen, amen. Strength, praise, and glory forever to God, the only giver of all good things. Amen, amen.”

Iraqi historian Omar Mohammed risked his life running the Mosul Eye archive from inside the city under ISIS—documenting executions, the destruction of heritage, and the systematic erasure of history. He later worked to recover Mosul’s long Jewish past. Then, after “Go back to Poland” was chanted at Jews, he went to Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Bełżec. @geraldposner and I have written books about the Holocaust. We know the power of learning what actually happened in World War II. A historian who archived one genocide standing at the site of another is a powerful read thefp.com/p/isis-mosul-omar-…
