The Rays disproving analytics
BASEBALL MIGHT BE GETTING THE WORLD SERIES IT NEEDS MOST!
At a time when analytics have practically taken over the game and a potential lockout is looming, the Rays and Brewers might be reminding baseball of something we’ve forgotten.
HOW TO ACTUALLY PLAY WINNING BASEBALL!
Pitching. Defense. Speed. Contact. Smart baserunning. Timely power. EXECUTION!
Forget chasing superstars just because they’re superstars. GO FIND SUPERSTARS WHO KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME!
Two organizations proving that sometimes the best way forward is BACK TO BASICS!
Maybe this World Series is bigger than a championship. Maybe it’s a reminder of what baseball has been missing.
And for once, I genuinely have NO IDEA who I’m picking!
Rays fans, Brewers fans… SELL ME ON YOUR SQUAD!
Convince me why YOUR team wins it all.
BEST ARGUMENT GETS MY PICK!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Rays and Brewers are among baseball's most analytics-driven organizations, using data and tech to identify edges like contact, speed, and small-ball tactics rather than representing a "back to basics" rejection of analytics.

Can't stop thinking about how much I hate the Yankees
It absolutely pisses me off to see a well run organization like the Rays win the pennant because if the Yankees were run properly they would rule the East
Aaron Judge is right, they need to go all in. All in on data science.
I logged onto twitter to see the discourse about the dodgers getting swept and was presented with tesla actually making a flying car??
This might be a hot take but if Aaron Boone is replaced as manager it should be with some nerd with no MLB experience who makes every call by the the data
I agree. Analytics are ruining the sport. The red Sox should do away with them
David Ortiz says the Red Sox need to put down the technology and start listening to veteran players.
That's after Willson Contreras said essentially the same thing.
Breslow already spent TWO HOURS meeting with Contreras over his comments.
Christ, Craig.
The complaint is TOO MUCH analyzing.
Stop analyzing the complaint.

Money btw
nypost.com/2026/10/10/sports… The Yankees are not being eliminated so consistency in the playoffs for talent reasons. They should look toward the dynastic Dodgers for what is missing.
Yanno I just have to question what these kinds of people think the numbers are. Like do you think they were just invented out of thin air, without being derived from the production on the field
As an engineer and a data guy, this confuses me
At some point, baseball has to get back to valuing ballplayers and not just numbers on a screen. Give me the Freddie Freemans, the Buster Poseys, Hunter Pences, Pablo Sandovals, Michael Youngs, Ian Kinslers of the world. Guys who just flat out know how to play the game. Everyone wants to talk launch angle and exit velo, but what happened to valuing a quality at bat?” The 9-pitch battle that might end in an out, but forces a pitcher to show everything he’s got.
The guy who hits behind the runner, takes what’s given, or just refuses to give a pitcher an easy inning. Those at-bats might not look sexy in the box score, but they show up in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Some of these dudes could absolutely leave the yard too. That’s the point. They weren’t one-dimensional. Somewhere along the way, we confused measurable tools with knowing how to win baseball games.
I’m not against analytics or hitting the ball hard, but there is an art to winning that you can’t fully measure. We need more guys who know how to play baseball, not just hitters, not just athletes, ballplayers. And I promise you, those dudes never go out of style
I was gonna fire off a vent tweet complaining about the yankees organization but I decided I will just not have any respect for them until they start spending several million dollars a year on data scientists and engineers and listen to everything they say
See the funny thing is when the Yankees make defensive mistakes they get punished but I know for a fact this runner will not score
The Yankees make it really easy to not be sad when they get eliminated by playing like such absolute dogshit there’s no high to come down from
