Scientists have built microscopic robots that can capture and move bacteria - and this is real footage of them at work! The tiny machines are controlled using light, allowing researchers to steer them through liquid, collect bacteria, and transport them to a chosen location. The technology is still experimental, but it could eventually give scientists a completely new way to manipulate microbes and cells at microscopic scales. We’re learning how to build machines for a world too small for us to see. Video: Qin et al., Nature Communications (2026), CC BY 4.0 · Edited · 20× speed

Lightning-driven fires in the boreal are a genuine amplifying feedback. Studies put the lightning increase at roughly 10–30% per °C in those regions, and the carbon stocks there are enormous. Emission reductions are still the main brake.

We talk about Mars constantly. But on this day in 1990, NASA's #Magellan mission arrived at #Venus and showed us that the most intriguing planet in the Solar System might have been right next door all along. If NASA announced a crewed mission tomorrow: 🔴 Mars 🟡 Venus (orbit/floating habitats) Which gets your vote and why? #SpaceExploration #NASA #Venus #Mars #Astronomy #STEM #FutureOfSpace #SpaceTwitter

🌍 Earth Overshoot Day 2026 has arrived! On July 30, humanity used up all the natural resources Earth can regenerate in an entire year. From that day onward, we're consuming nature faster than ecosystems can renew it. According to Global Footprint Network, Earth Overshoot Day 2026 fell on July 30, with global demand equivalent to 1.73 Earths. That's the highest level of ecological overshoot ever recorded. Energy use, land use, resource extraction, deforestation and carbon emissions all contribute to the gap. Whether you agree with every aspect of the methodology or not, the trend is difficult to ignore: Humanity is consuming resources faster than the planet can replace them. The question is whether technology, efficiency, and cleaner energy can help change that trajectory.

I have written an article that goes into the 2026/2027 El Niño, which is happening now, that goes more in depth here: nitter.gq/YearsAfterNext/status/…

Incredible real footage: A flight attendant captured a bright green fireball meteor from her plane window over European Russia. On the night of October 27, 2025, Alexandra Spasskaya was working a Ulyanovsk–Moscow flight at ~10,000 meters when this brilliant bolide streaked across the sky near Moscow. The green glow and fragmentation were also seen by many people on the ground. A rare high-altitude perspective of a natural meteoroid entering Earth’s atmosphere Pure cosmic fireworks. 🌠

It would have been a more plausible scenario if the tidal wave had come from the Atlantic side of the UK. This makes no sense. The North Sea only has an average depth of 95 meters. That wave would be dragging its nuts on the Dogger Bank.

Agree. The loop is already spinning. Models helping design the next generation of models + automated research pipelines is the real signal. The next 18 months are going to feel compressed.

July was another reminder that the future isn't waiting around. This month we saw: 🤖 Humanoid robots doing real jobs in logistics centres. 🦟 China unveils a mosquito-sized drone designed for reconnaissance. 🧠 AI becoming more capable of carrying out increasingly complex tasks. 🏭 Japan launching a major push into "physical AI"—bringing AI and robotics together for factories, logistics and healthcare. ⚛️ More progress towards commercial fusion energy. 🧬 AI continuing to accelerate drug discovery and medical research. 🚀 Countries investing heavily in AI, robotics and space technology as the race to build the next generation of infrastructure gathers pace. The future isn't arriving all at once. It's arriving one breakthrough at a time. What caught your attention this month?

China just unveiled a mosquito-sized drone that looks (and flies) like a real insect. Developed by the National University of Defense Technology, this tiny bionic robot is packed with micro cameras and microphones for covert surveillance and special military missions. Its leaf-shaped wings flap up to 500 times per second; it can perch on almost anything, and it’s nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye or radar. Flight time is still only a few minutes, but the potential is massive. The future of reconnaissance just got a lot smaller. #Robotics #Drones #MilitaryTech #Innovation #China
