Peace is not achieved by asking a country under attack to stop defending itself, nor does preparing to protect its civilians demonstrate a desire for war. Peace requires Russia to stop the attacks, not Ukraine to leave its cities and civilians vulnerable.

What makes Ukrainian a distinct language?
This Ukrainian Writing and Language Day, explore the origins and evolution of Ukrainian through the centuries.
Terrorise civilians into darkness. Recruit foreigners through deception. Feed them into the same war.
The UN has now documented both.
Behind the Russian “great power” myth is something much uglier: cruelty at home, exploitation abroad.
Russia is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity by intentionally attacking civilian infrastructure – including vital energy systems – in Ukraine, an independent UN investigations panel said on Monday. cnn.com/2026/10/26/europe/un…

Russia carried out a horrific ballistic missile strike on Kyiv overnight. Targets included a dormitory, a medical facility, residential buildings, the metro, a bridge and a gas station. This is pure state-sponsored terrorism.
At least ten other regions of Ukraine also came under attack, with strikes mostly targeting energy infrastructure. People have been killed and injured across the country.
Helping Russia break its international isolation while it refuses to stop its war is unacceptable. Putin is a murderer with blood on his hands. His place is in the dock in The Hague, not at international events.

The latest report of the UN Commission of Inquiry confirms what Ukrainians have experienced for years: Russia's systematic attacks on civilian energy infrastructure constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Having failed to achieve its aggressive aims on the battlefield, Russia has sought to break the will of the Ukrainian people by attacking civilian cities and critical infrastructure. It has deliberately deprived millions of people of electricity, heating and water, turning cold and darkness into instruments of war.
The Commission's findings go beyond Ukraine. By documenting Russia's deceptive recruitment of foreign nationals for military service and characterizing these practices as human trafficking, the report exposes the global dimension of Russia's unlawful conduct.
As winter approaches and these attacks continue, it is time for the international community to increase pressure on Moscow, strengthen support for Ukraine, and ensure accountability for all international crimes committed in the course of Russia's aggression.
There can be no just and lasting peace without justice.

Why is russia allowed to get away with this? When did this become normal in the so-called civilized world?

The Kremlin wants the world to forget who started the war. On 24 February 2022, Putin ordered an unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, unleashing the largest war in Europe since the Second World War.
The war was not ‘forced upon’ Russia.
Russia chose to invade.

United Nations Day is an occasion to speak honestly. What kind of world are we leaving to the next generation?
This question was at the heart of the creation of the @UN 81 years ago.
Ukraine helped shape the fundamental principles enshrined in its Charter. Yet now, we must acknowledge an uncomfortable truth: the UN is far from its best shape.
The pledge to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” remains unfulfilled, while the international system designed to uphold peace and security is failing those it was meant to protect.
For some, these words seem to have become little more than a ceremonial phrase, repeated on anniversaries but forgotten when decisive action is needed. For Ukrainians, who face Russia’s war of aggression every day, they are a matter of life and death.
At the same time, the UN has shown what nations can achieve when they work together. We are deeply grateful to the UN for its vital assistance to millions of Ukrainians. Equally important, the UN remains a global platform where Ukraine's voice is heard, where the truth about Russia's aggression is brought to the world, and where nations stand up for our sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ukraine stands firmly by the UN Charter and calls on all nations to do the same. The time has come to prove that the UN Charter is more than a declaration of good intentions.
On United Nations Day, the principal wish and the main task is to ensure accountability for the violator of the UN Charter, restore respect for its fundamental principles, and ensure the ability to effectively maintain international peace and security.

OTD in 1956, Hungarians rose up against Soviet-backed communist rule. Students demanded free elections, a free press and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. On 4 November, the Soviet Union launched an invasion to brutally crush the uprising.
Seven decades later, Russia is seeking to rehabilitate the Soviet Union’s actions by portraying the uprising as the result of ‘Western provocations’, whitewashing the brutal intervention that killed and wounded thousands and forced 200,000 into exile.

Did you know Ukraine was one of the founding members of the United Nations in 1945?
For eight decades, Ukraine has contributed to the UN’s work across human rights, the rule of law, sustainable development, and, above all, peace and security.
Today, Ukraine continues to defend the principles on which the organisation was built and work towards a just and lasting peace.
