- See "Remote" in the title.
- Scroll down. "Remote (US only)."
- Next job. "Remote, EU timezones."
- Next job. "Work from anywhere!" Location field: Canada.
- Finally find a real worldwide role.
- Posted 4 months ago. Still open.
- Apply anyway.
- Silence.
- 3 weeks later: "Thanks for your interest! Please complete this 6-hour take-home."
- Do it.
- Live coding round. No docs. No AI. The same AI they require you to use daily.
- 4 people on the call. Nobody turns their camera on.
- "We'll get back to you by Friday."
- Which Friday is still unclear.
The end?
Getting a remote dev job in 2019:

Startups, in my experience. A big team usually has a backend lead who writes the role. A 10-person startup often has a founder who writes "Node.js developer" and means three jobs at once.
"Who gets paged when this breaks" is a great line for a job post, by the way. Says more than the whole stack list.

jsgurujobs is JavaScript and TypeScript only, so no Java roles on the board.
That said, plenty of backend teams there hire strong Java engineers who are open to TypeScript on Node. This one's a good example: 7+ years backend, the language matters less than what you've built.

Backend and full-stack, by far.
A full-stack dev who wrote route handlers in Next.js gets hired to own an API other teams depend on. Then the first real load test happens.
Neither person did anything wrong. The post just never said which job it was.
I wrote up how to hire Node.js developers in 2026: the three roles, hiring across time zones, and what to actually test in the interview.

"We need a Node.js developer."
Which one?
The backend engineer who designs APIs and gets paged at night.
The full-stack dev who ships a feature from the database to the button.
The tooling engineer who keeps your build and CI alive.
All three call themselves Node.js developers. All three are telling the truth.
A post that doesn't say which one it wants gets all three, and usually not the one it needed.
Hiring managers, which one did you actually need the last time you posted a Node role?

Why Eneba is my favorite on this list: most "Remote, Europe" posts don't say which countries. Eneba names all ten. That's the difference between "maybe I can apply" and "I can apply."

Every day, developers message me asking for a job.
I'm not a hiring manager. I run a job board.
And here's the uncomfortable part:
Applying alone puts you in a pile of 500.
Applying + a short note to the engineering lead who needs the help puts you in a conversation.
Use job boards as a map: who's hiring, what they pay, where they can actually hire.
Then find the person behind the role.
