And from a communications point of view, this kind of strategy is far more effective than ANC telling voters "we gave you grants. We gave you freedom." It wasn't just Gwede. A lot of them did it. I remember one Minister cornering a student at a tertiary institution telling him how he was there because of the ANC. It doesn't work. Especially when you know nothing about that student - maybe he has no money for food and transport; maybe he has debts, maybe his siblings sre also struggling. They are abrasive, tone-deaf and very often adopt a triumphalist tone. The ANC's generic messaging (grants, freedom) can never beat these directed, forensic case studies. But they will say "You just hate the ANC." They listen to cheerleaders and that's why they are here.

Some cold hard facts about the various parties’ campaigns in Joburg. A dose of reality. Some fairness.
Zille worked her tuchus off for that seat in Joburg. Her campaign started 18 months ago while the other “big” parties did very little and were nowhere to be seen. ActionSA started shortly after. And so did some other smaller parties.
If winning is about who wants it the most. If winning is about who works the hardest. If winning is about who is willing to put in the miles, the hours, the blood, the sweat, the tears. It is not an if. It is just that. That is what it takes. If you want to win at anything in life you have to work hard, and in return, life rewards you with a victory well earned and well deserved. Zille deserves that seat and you don’t have to like her to recognise that. The residents of Joburg rewarded her with that seat, and you don’t have to like her to recognise that.
There are no more guaranteed electoral victories. The political landscape has changed. In fact, it started changing 10 years ago - in 2026 - and those wise to the winds recognised that.
Maqabane, it is a new day, and assuming voters will reward you because that’s what they have always done? Hard work wins the day.
Good luck and Godspeed to one and all.

Helen Zille is considering running for Joburg mayor in 2026 apparently. Let me tell you now, if she does, she will win. And not by accident. Like it or not, she has a proven record of turning a city around. Just look at Cape Town. You can debate her politics all you want, but she gets things done. Joburg, as it stands, is crying out for that kind of leadership. (And Cape Town has the lowest unemployment rate of all major cities).
If this happens, the ANC will lose Johannesburg for good. And when Joburg goes, so does Gauteng. People are tired. They want working traffic lights, clean streets, functioning municipalities, not endless excuses. Right now, everyone is complaining about what the ANC has done to the city. Zille offers a real, visible alternative.
This might be uncomfortable for some to hear, but mark this tweet and save it. If I am wrong, I will say so. But I doubt I will be.

I have never come across an article about this Mugabe kid that doesn’t involve some criminal activity or the other. 🥴
#BREAKING Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of the late former president, is one of five men arrested today for allegedly assaulting an investigator from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission during an operation to seize two vehicles allegedly smuggled from South Africa

"Some of you are greeting people with 'Viva!' and 'Amandla!' "Are you ward councillors? Do you hand out food parcels?"
"No, General!"
"Good. Because this is SAPS, not a municipality!" KZN Police Commissioner General Mkhwanazi said.
And let me make this even clear: You are not a comrade."
He locked eyes with the squad.
"A criminal doesn't check your political membership before opening fire. If you want to sing struggle songs, join a choir😂. While you wear this uniform, your only political party is the Constitution! Now get in your vans and go to work!"
The courtyard cleared in five seconds flat. 🫡🔥
