“Hi. It is so nice to meet you. I really love frogs.” When our Public Relations Manager Brynn Garner met Dr. Caleb Ofori-Boateng, she approached him with a simple greeting that kicked off an expansive conversation. Soon, Brynn and Caleb were reflecting on the outsize impact of an elusive frog that was once thought extinct. Caleb is a conservation hero, internationally recognized for his efforts to protect Ghana’s amphibians and reptiles. He talked with Brynn about a unique species that he helped rediscover: the Critically Endangered Togo Slippery Frog. Our partnership with the organization Caleb founded, @Herp_Ghana, helped establish and expand the Onepone Endangered Species Refuge to cover the majority of this rare frog’s global range. The latest expansion protects an estimated 250 mature Togo Slippery Frogs, Caleb told Brynn. They are some of the last survivors of their species. While their conversation was compelling, Brynn was determined to see the Togo Slippery Frog firsthand. As a certified Frog Watch volunteer who can identify the calls of 26 frogs and counting, she is no stranger to night hikes and careful listening. Rainforest Trust is proud to be a founding member of the Species Recovery Alliance, a groundbreaking collaboration of nine philanthropic organizations and conservation leaders committing more than $500 million over the next five years to prevent extinctions and recover the world’s most threatened species. 🌎🐾 Officially announced at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Species Recovery Alliance brings together nine founding members, including: @RainforestTrust Ayers Wild Cat Conservation Trust @BezosEarthFund Colossal Foundation Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund Fondation Segré Franklinia Foundation @rewild @WildEarth More than 31,000 species worldwide are classified as Endangered, Critically Endangered, or Extinct in the Wild. Protecting their habitats is essential, but research shows that 57% of threatened species also need targeted conservation interventions, such as conservation breeding, habitat restoration, genetic rescue, reintroductions, disease mitigation, invasive species control, poaching prevention and anti-poaching measures, or other methods to prevent extinction. The #SpeciesRecoveryAlliance aims to become the largest coordinated philanthropic effort dedicated to species recovery. Rather than pooling funding, members will coordinate and align their investments, and work alongside conservation organizations and local partners to support effective recovery actions at the scale and over the time frames needed to achieve measurable results. Members will also share lessons and report on progress using the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Green Status of Species (@IUCN), as well as the Red List of Threatened Species, to assess collective impact. At Rainforest Trust, we know that preventing extinction requires more than protecting habitat alone. Our donors stepped up to protect a vital wildlife corridor for the Himalayan Wolf! 🐺 Land conversion for agriculture and resource extraction, along with poaching, have driven the species’ numbers down across India and Nepal, and the highest estimates count fewer than 4,000 adult Himalayan Wolves remaining in the wild. Thanks to donors like you, vital habitat for the Himalayan Wolf and other threatened species is now protected in Nepal’s 123,157-acre Badimalika–Ramaroshan Forest Conservation Area (FCA). With our local partner, National Trust for Nature Conservation @NTNCNepal, we helped secure this government designation to prohibit commercial extractive activities and allow the sustainable use of forest resources for local communities. The remarkably diverse ecosystems of the Badimalika-Ramaroshan region extend from marshy lowlands to alpine highlands. 🏔️ Located between two national parks, the new FCA connects habitat across elevations for a protected corridor that will be crucial as species like the Himalayan Black Bear, Endangered Alpine Musk Deer, Himalayan Wolf, and hundreds of others adapt to climate change.
