Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

🚨 BREAKING: POLISH PRESIDENT STORMS HIS OWN HIGHEST COURT AT 1 AM 🚨 Karol Nawrocki just walked straight into the Constitutional Tribunal building after turning his plane around mid-flight from Senegal. He looked the pro-EU judges in the eye and told them they are NOT judges. Their attempted takeover is OVER. “You are not judges of the Constitutional Tribunal!” 🔥🔥🔥 This is the elected President of Poland personally ending a coup in real time. Donald Tusk’s camp declared the Tribunal’s president (Bogdan Święczkowski) “suspended,” sent police to surround the building, and tried to seize control with judges who were never sworn in by the President. Nawrocki cut his trip short, flew home, arrived after midnight with the head of the Supreme Court, and forced his way inside through the pushing and scuffling at the doors. He is not backing down. Poland’s highest court was being hijacked. The President just took it back. 🇵🇱 Go get ’em, Mr. President! 🇺🇸 This is what standing up to a power grab looks like.

If HMRC are allowed to take money from individuals’ bank accounts, as proposed in the budget today, then we are heading to a dark place. This tool could be used against anyone deemed to be a threat by the government of the day.
🚨 NEW: John Healey is set to announce the following in his Budget later - The gas standing charge will be scrapped to save £27 a year on a typical bill - Green levies on energy bills will be scraped "for good" - NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for another year - Poorer households on benefits will receive extra help with energy bills before January's sharp rises - The VAT cut on electricity bills, which was due to expire in April, will be extended (though it's not clear if this will be announced in the Budget or separately) - The Government will remove the link between gas and electricity prices, which currently inflates household bills, "in the long term" - Banks will face higher taxes, with the surcharge on their profits potentially rising from 3% to 8%, making it the Budget’s biggest revenue raiser - HMRC will be given powers to seize money from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax - The freeze on rail fares will reportedly not be extended beyond April - Online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Temu will be made responsible for collecting unpaid VAT from sellers to fund a cut in business rates for high street shops - The thresholds for income tax will be frozen again so another half a million people may be dragged into the higher rate - January's planned increase in fuel duty will be cancelled - Pensioners relying solely on the state pension will see their tax-free allowance rise to £13,036, in line with the pension increase, so they don't pay income tax - Billions in long-term borrowing to invest in defence firms and raise the share of GDP spent on defence (without breaking fiscal rules, as the investments are expected to generate returns) - The upcoming "Your First Home" scheme will be made more generous to provide greater support for middle-income earners - The Budget will also assume the Rosebank oil field is approved, which will generate "significant tax revenues"

The government are all over the place on defence spending. I don't think Andy Burnham realises he commits to spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030 in this interview...his Defence Secretary won’t even make that commitment! When the government are saying Britain needs to be ready for war in 1000 days, hitting a defence spending target in 2035 is too late. Getting to 3% by 2030 means spending the money to be ready NOW, not in 9 years time.
‘You’ve just spooked everybody by saying stockpile…what are you doing to invest in defence?’ Susanna Reid challenges the PM on whether he will hit the defence spending target of 3% of GDP by 2030. Andy Burnham insists his government ‘will’ hit the target. #defencespending #andyburnham #defence #budget

Britain's national debt has just hit £3 TRILLION. My generation is leaving our children and grandchildren an inheritance of debt and decline - we have spent their money before they have even earned it. The time for yet more cowardice is over. Brutal honesty is now required. Difficult decisions lie ahead. There will be no painless solutions. Anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with the British public. We are on the road to total economic collapse - it will be utterly catastrophic. Deep spending cuts, fundamental reform of the state and a return to financial discipline are all absolutely necessary. Every department must justify its spending. Every politician must confront the reality that we simply cannot afford everything. Every penny must go further. The longer we delay, the more painful these decisions become. Our children and our grandchildren are going to spend decades paying for our failures. What a shameful legacy that is.

Customer: Is the raw milk safe? The supermarket one's been pasteurised. Farmer: Why do you think they pasteurise it? Customer: To kill what's in it. Farmer: So what's in it? Customer: ...I'd assumed nothing. Farmer: Their pint is a tanker's worth from dozens of farms, mixed. Nobody checks it for salmonella on the way in. They don't have to. The heat's the plan. Customer: And yours? Farmer: I've no heat. So mine's tested for salmonella, E. coli, listeria, the lot, and an inspector's in that parlour twice a year. Customer: So yours has to be clean and theirs has to be cooked. Farmer: Theirs gets a second chance. Mine isn't allowed to need one. Customer: Which cow is it from? Farmer: [looks across the yard] Third from the left. Mabel. She's seen you. Customer: The carton at home just says "British". Farmer: There are 7,000 dairy farms left in Britain. "British" narrows it down to all of them. Customer: How long does it keep? Farmer: A week, then it sours. You can make cheese with sour. Customer: And the supermarket one? Farmer: That doesn't sour. It was dead when it left. It just rots. [He bought two litres. Mabel watched him to the car.]

In just two years Labour have hit us with over £64 billion in extra taxes & over £244 billion in extra borrowing - and they’ve squandered the lot with nothing to show for it. Fancy thinking that the answer is more taxes and more borrowing. The mind boggles.
