Exploring Prokaryotic Gene Regulation in the Lac Operon #TeachBioTues
Students build & simulate one key operon in the common E. Coli bacteria: the lac operon. Model lac operon’s responses to glucose and lactose. Explore how the lac operon regulates lactose digestion.
Explore how a mutation affects the simulation results to learn how mutations affect the lac operon. Predict the effects of various mutations to solidify understanding of lac operon pathways.
Students then reflect on the various strengths and limitations of the model.

Bacterial Chemotaxis #TeachBioTues
Modeling the chemical (chemo-) movement (-taxis) of a prokaryotic system (bacteria) allows students to examine a small group of essential components similar to eukaryotic systems that transform sensory signals into motor responses.
Students summarize bacteria stable vs. oscillating behavior under various conditions to demonstrate understanding. They end by considering the model's strengths & limitations and considering how running/tumbling behavior might change for various bacteria w/ diff. adaptations

Modeling Light Reactions and Dark Reactions in Photosynthesis #TeachBioTues
Students build models of two mutually dependent processes: light-dependent reactions and the Calvin Cycle. These processes are responsible for photosynthesis.
Activity 2: Explore what happens to the plant when the availability of external stimuli, such as sunlight, changes. Add pigments and captured CO2 to the model to reflect additional observable components.
