In the 1960s, ethologist John Calhoun presented an unnerving outcome in his ‘Universe 25’ experiment. By simulating utopia for a population of rats, he observed that once all physical needs were met, the population didn’t thrive, but rather collapsed. The ultimate issue? Overpopulation and limited social roles.
A future where AI significantly reduces available social roles doesn’t necessarily imply a dystopia. Instead, it stresses the need for proactive planning, innovation, and policy creation. We must ensure our transition into an AI-dominated world is inclusive, equitable, and balanced.
