Anthropic just put Claude in Slack as a "team member" — channel-scoped identity, memory, tools, async task delegation, spend limits, action logs, and optional ambient behavior that follows quiet threads and surfaces relevant context. I shipped the local version of this the day before. That's the whole point of the piece: ambient agents are moving from weird personal setup → enterprise product category. Same architecture, different trust boundary. An ambient agent isn't a chatbot with Slack access. It's a persistent, context-bearing operator embedded in the room's workflow: • room awareness • mention escalation • source-checking before it speaks • memory/instructions as the control plane • restraint by default Their lane: hosted enterprise SaaS with admin controls. My lane: local/private personal runtime, tools living closer to the machine. Hosted enterprise agent vs local/private personal agent is going to be one of the defining splits. @bcherny @_catwu @trq212 New post šŸ‘‡

There is an absolutely WILD story in this @GergelyOrosz podcast episode 1. An unnamed CTO of a cash-flow-negative company was debating doing layoffs. AI 2. He says "I don't want to hurt morale like that, I won't do it" 3. A few months later, he says to @GergelyOrosz that he's cash flow positive. WTF. How? 4. The company had been licensing a component from a licensing company that was critical for their business. 5. One day, a dev thinks "what if we got an agent to build our own?" 6. The agent does so well that they produce a BETTER, FASTER version of the component they were licensing. 7. They debate open-sourcing it, and they ask the licensing company about it 8. The licensing company panics, and says "we will pay you NOT to open-source this" 9. They also say "we'll also pay you extra so we can re-license it" 10. So a big outlay became a recurring windfall, thanks to the ingenuity of a dev asking the right question. Individual contributors have never been more powerful. Think bigger. youtu.be/mQu0zN4IvSI?si=P_v9…

It’s so weird seeing Microsoft prioritise iPhone Duo over Android Foldables. This is the iPhone effect at work.
I should mention Microsoft Copilot is also Duo optimized and has a pretty great experience

Ghostty 1.4 is now out! Full Kitty graphics with animation (the first terminal besides Kitty to do it), scrollback compression for much lower memory usage, macOS 27 support, a new OpenGL renderer on Linux, ghostty +ssh, big performance gains, and hundreds more changes. The highlights: - Scrollback compression: scrollback compresses ~90+% on average, meaning your terminals use that much less live memory - Huge memory savings across the board: no single large thing, just lots of good improvements lowers memory usage everywhere, netting anywhere from 50 to 90% less memory usage depending on workload - Kitty graphics is now 100% complete, including animation and relative placements, after a full conformance pass against the spec and Kitty itself - The Kitty clipboard protocol, with an image preview when a program asks to read your clipboard - Split drag and drop on Linux, including between windows - ghostty +ssh installs terminfo on remote hosts automatically, so things just work over SSH - Lots of terminal emulation accuracy fixes This release is 7 months of work from 172 contributors over 2,889 commits. It also fixes 10 security advisories, so please update. Full release notes: ghostty.org/docs/install/rel…

Apple is supporting MCP in iWork! I wonder if it requires an Apple Creator Studio subscription. "New MCP support, built on this platform, enables external AI agents and tools to read content, perform edits, and execute automated actions directly in Keynote, Pages, and Numbers." Also why the new AI features in iWork and Logic Pro for Mac is powered by OpenAI models instead of Gemini models like Siri AI? "A new intelligent assistant powered by a combination of Apple-built models and OpenAI joins Logic Pro for Mac". "Visual productivity apps receive a new generation of intelligence features for subscribers, including an intelligent assistant, built on Apple models and OpenAI, directly within Keynote, Pages, and Numbers." And we are getting agent friendly file formats: "Keynote introduces support for Keynote Interchange Format (.keyx), an open JSON-based bundle file format designed to be readable and accessible to external tools, developer workflows, and AI agents." Also interesting to see the intelligent assistant UI is a floating window. Normally I like persistent UI but the copy button on every AI response feels busy. Finally this is the most specific software requirement I've ever seen from Apple: "Apple Immersive Video processing requires 32GB of RAM, with 64GB and storage read speeds of 2,000MB/s or faster recommended; some features require Apple silicon"
User: I heard you have a new AI feature for iWork. Did you call it iWork Buddy (you know like Workout Buddy)? Or maybe Siri AI for iWork? Or iWork Intelligence since existing iWork AI features are called 'Intelligence'? Apple: No, it is called Intelligent Assistant (Beta). User: I just bought the latest iPhone, Mac and an iCloud subscription so I should be good to go right? Apple: No, you also have to pay for an Apple Creator Studio subscription for AI features.

Huge day for Creator Studio today. Our new in-app assistants can help you get things done in record time. MCP allows you to bring your own agent if you want. And an open source format for Keynote (and Python library!) so you can create Keynote documents programmatically on any platform. Super proud of the team. Hope you love it!

I wrote down how my work with agents changed this year. I still break down the work into vertical slices that ship on their own. I rarely read diffs now: independent reviews and a risk check catch most of it, so my time goes into shaping and guardrails. mgratzer.com/posts/reforging…

PSA for macOS users: 1. Apple’s supplied SSL certificate bundle at /etc/ssl/cert.pem still trusts certificates attackers can forge using compromised eMudhra keys. 2. I confirmed this on macOS 26.7.1 and 27.0.1 using Apple’s built-in curl and Git. 3. An attacker intercepting connections from tools using this bundle could replace downloads with malware. With commands like curl … | sh, that malware would execute immediately. 4. Removing the roots that authorize those certificates blocks the tested chains. Both OS updates restored roots I’d previously removed, requiring me to remove them again. 4. I’ve submitted the findings to Apple’s security team and am awaiting their response. In the meantime, you can apply a temporary fix as outlined below. 5. To check and fix your machine, give an agent like ChatGPT/Codex or Claude Code the following prompt: ā€œIndependently verify whether Apple’s /etc/ssl/cert.pem still permits trust in certificates signed with compromised eMudhra keys. If so, back it up and remove the roots enabling that trust, identified by verified SPKI fingerprints. Confirm Apple’s built-in curl and Git reject those chains while ordinary HTTPS still works. Preserve rollback and never disable TLS verification.ā€ Note that removing these roots can also block legitimate sites. This is a temporary mitigation, not a substitute for a fix from Apple. I’ll share the script I used in a follow-up post if you’d prefer to use that directly.
PSA for Codex CLI users: 1. Codex 0.163.0’s release lockfile pins rustls-webpki 0.103.15 and root bundles that can still trust compromised eMudhra certificates. 2. An attacker intercepting your connection could impersonate a server, steal sensitive data, or alter responses, potentially tricking Codex into running malicious commands. 3. Codex 0.164.0, released October 23 at 12:48 a.m. ET, updates those dependencies to fixed versions. 4. To check your codex version run "codex --version". It should be at least 0.164.0. 5. To patch the vulnerability, run "codex update". 6. Apps that bundle their own Codex copy must also be checked.
