Amazing public good!
After almost 10 years of work corporateownershipdata.com now makes available all publicly available ownership records of 7,156 publicly traded firms, not just the S&P 500, including dual-class shares.

🚨New paper and (the usual) excellent @paulnovosad summary alert!
New paper: Cities in South Asia are hotbeds of upward mobility for everyone, but especially for women. This is the urban-minus-rural difference in the adult education rank of a child growing up in a bottom-half household. 🧵 1/

“when Kushner used the phone, they could see his screen. Almost as soon as they got inside, the [Dutch] intelligence service began capturing every image of Kushner’s screen as he used it, filing their own cache of surveillance on their internal computer servers.” vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…
The Russians hacked Jared's phone. Then Dutch cyberspies reverse-engineered that hack, giving them unprecedented access to his world. Bananas story here in @VanityFair

PSA: in light of recent cyberattacks and vulnerabilities, I recommend everyone: * use a good password manager (1Password) and do not duplicate passwords * use two factor auth for everything important (not via sms!! Google Authenticator or better yet YubiKey) * Auto-updates on, and restart weekly so they actually install * Freeze your credit * Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN * Get your cell carrier to give you a port-out PIN or number lock that makes the carrier refuse to move your number without the PIN You can ask your claude code to audit what on your laptop is out of date and needs updating.

AI is the most transformative technology of our era. That opens up an exciting set of Research opportunities. @professor_ajay, @akorinek and I lay out nine grand challenges for economists in this new essay.
Transformative AI's potential impact demands new approaches to research on work, growth, inequality, and more. @erikbryn, @professor_ajay, and @akorinek outline nine "grand challenges" in a new piece for @CACMmag. Read their full agenda here: cacm.acm.org/research/a-rese…

A signature feature of academic AI writing is (currently) that it is has bad judgment on what is important and what is not important, even refine.ink. This is one of the most damaging AI "tells", b/c it reflects bad judgment on the part of the author as well. 1/

Can markets broaden cooperation beyond the local community? New version of "Doux Commerce", with @RazTzachi. Evidence from U.S. railroad expansion: less parochialism, greater trust and tolerance, and less reliance on relatives for support. maxposch.com/research.html

With math essentially being delegated to OpenAI, here's what I predict for economics and the social sciences more generally: ✅The top tier of research will just become better and it will be normal human-led research where AI is used for scale (e.g. conducting qualitative interviews with relevant populations, running behavioral interventions in the field, analyzing massive text data, etc.) ✅ Field experiments will rise in value and generally making "connections" with firms and being able to run stuff (potentially testing AI pipelines) will be in high demand ✅ Research with administrative data will become even more valuable, but the benefits might be concentrated among some prolific authors who are allowed by the government agencies to use local models to analyze the data at scale. PhD students can probably forget about it ✅Economic history will have a very exciting boom and there will be an enormous race and big rewards for digitizing archives as a source to both identify new research strategies and document new descriptive facts. ✅Review and verification systems will become massively improved with AI assistance and it will become standard practice to do a 360 review of the paper + code + data at the *submission* stage. ⚠️Research that in principle can already be almost completely outsourced to the AI (download and analyze public data, run simple survey experiments, write theory models) is in for a big shock. This would be very bad from the perspective of researchers who depend on this "bread and butter" research, but I think this type of work will just be outsourced to public agencies who can answer their own questions without the need for "peer-reviewed" research.

Overleaf will be dead within the next year.
BREAKING: @OpenAI just launched Space, an agent-native office suite. It's a Google Drive–like place inside ChatGPT where you, your Dots, and your team can organize and work on files together. OpenAI is also introducing native apps for documents, spreadsheets, and slides that you can use inside ChatGPT and with Space. The obvious win is that you stop switching windows between ChatGPT and another app like Notion while you write. The less obvious one is speed. When a Dot builds a document through its browser in Google Docs, the edits practically crawl in, because Docs wasn't built for agents. Native documents don't have that lag. You can tag your Dot inside the document itself instead of going back to the chat to tell it to check the file. I’ve long expected the company to do this—in 2024 I wrote about the potential for documents, slides, and sheets inside ChatGPT—and I’m glad the product is finally here. I’m already doing most of my work in ChatGPT’s in-app browser, and this makes that process smoother: I can tag my Dot in a comment on a document and get a revision inline as I’m working. The back-and-forth feels more like collaboration. See more on the live feed @every: every.to/live/openai-devday-…

Internet pile-ons are bad. I get it. But it makes me upset to see Ariely, Gino, Arday, Orélien etc cheat their way to career success when so many others try to do things the honest way. And people reflexively defending *obvious* fraud makes it impossible to clean things up. 1/3
