Not living w your parents build confidence in managing bills, budgeting, setting routines, and even emotional distance for healthier family relationships. And you can start making choices that match your life goals instead of everyone’s expectations.
I used to be so confused hearing colorist jokes coming from other Black kids. I remember being young and genuinely wondering what was wrong with my Blackness compared to theirs.
parents have less control over their children’s influences. it used to matter what neighborhood you lived in, what schools they attended and what environments you exposed them to. now a child can adopt an entire worldview from the internet without ever leaving their bedroom.
we’ve placed so much emphasis on financial provision that people have started treating it as the entirety of their contribution. parenting is so much more than keeping a child fed, clothed and sheltered. there’s a difference between keeping someone alive and helping them thrive.
but then you have to ask, does the society we live in even allow people the capacity to do all of that? when 40+ hours of your week are dedicated to survival, how much time and energy is left for nurturing, teaching, community or even your own development?
Unfortunately I don’t give myself enough credit. I bought myself a cake today because a win is a win !
