Herbert Boyer agreed to a ten-minute meeting. It lasted three hours. That is how Genentech tells the story of its beginning. In 1976, Bob Swanson approached Boyer, a biochemist at UCSF, about turning recombinant DNA into commercial products. Boyer and Stanford’s Stanley Cohen had helped develop the underlying technology. The opportunity was specific: could engineered bacteria become a way to manufacture medicines? The scientific work was promising. Building a company around it was another challenge. Genentech’s founders faced skepticism from both academic and business communities. What I find interesting is how Boyer approached that gap. He partnered with someone whose strengths complemented his own. Boyer brought scientific depth. Swanson focused on building the business. Recognizing that partnership was itself an entrepreneurial decision. The early work still had to prove that the idea could produce something useful. In 1977, researchers at UCSF and City of Hope, working with Genentech, demonstrated production of the human hormone somatostatin in bacteria. Recombinant human insulin followed. Genentech worked with Eli Lilly on the production process, and the FDA approved Humulin in 1982. A scientific method was becoming a route to making medicines. Boyer remained involved in the company as a vice president from 1976 to 1990. Decades later, in 2009, Roche agreed to pay approximately $46.8 billion for the Genentech shares it did not already own. But the entrepreneurial lesson starts much earlier than that transaction. We often ask whether a scientist can become a CEO. A more useful question may be: can this scientist recognize the commercial potential of the work, bring the right people together, and help build an organization around it? Boyer’s story makes that distinction tangible. He did not have to leave his scientific identity behind to help create a company that changed medicine. Which scientist-commercial partner combination would you add to this series? #EntrepreneurialScientists

Data centers are set to more than double their electricity use by 2030. Where will the firm, zero-carbon power come from? Nuclear fission and fusion are two contenders worth a closer look. ⚛️ At RicebergVentures we mapped the nuclear landscape to find out where the real opportunities are for early-stage investors. A few things stood out: Fission works. The challenge is building it. Vogtle 3/4 in the US ended up costing $31–35B, and Flamanville-3 took 17 years from construction start to grid connection. The bottleneck now is cost, construction and licensing, not physics. SMRs are the new frontier. Over 80 small modular reactor designs are in development across 18+ countries. TerraPower, X-energy, Kairos, Oklo and others are racing toward first-of-a-kind deployments. Thorium is also getting fresh attention, with India holding some of the world's largest reserves. Fusion is attracting serious capital but is still unproven. Commonwealth Fusion Systems alone has raised more than $3B. Yet no fusion system has produced sustained net electricity. The open problems are confinement, neutron-resistant materials, tritium breeding and recirculating power. Our takeaway: fission is a near- to medium-term option with execution risk. Fusion is a longer-term bet carrying deep physics and engineering risk. For deep-tech investors, the breakthroughs to watch sit in materials, fuels and power electronics. Our venture fellow @joyce_mo_ put together the full market scan, covering the technology, key projects, regulation and economics. To read the full Nuclear Overview, comment “Report” and I’ll share the complete report link in the comments. #NuclearEnergy #Fusion #SMR #DeepTech #VentureCapital #ClimateTech

Four years of progress in Indian deep tech. Yet on international panels, I still hear the same three questions from global allocators. We have much better answers today. But the excitement has yet to translate into foreign capital flowing at the scale this ecosystem deserves. At @FundForumEvent Asia in Singapore, we discussed whether India is the next trillion-dollar wealth opportunity. These were the questions that stayed with me: “India has been a consumer story. What changed?” The technical talent was always there. What was missing was risk capital willing to back ambitious science—and role models showing founders that building globally competitive technology companies from India was possible. Four years ago, @_RicebergVC_ was among a handful of funds starting to invest in this space. Early investors helped address the capital gap. Founders did the harder work: building the companies that others could look up to. That combination is changing what the next generation believes it can build. “Who funds the next round, especially before meaningful revenue?” A fair question. Technical milestones can take years, and the capital required often rises well before revenue does. When we started, we had little expectation of domestic follow-on capital. We helped founders position themselves globally from day one: global customers, global partnerships and global investors. For many breakthrough technologies, that is a natural path. The market for a better propulsion system, semiconductor or medical technology extends far beyond the country where it was developed. We have seen this work in our portfolio. Domestic capital is also becoming more active, with the government’s RDI Fund adding another source of support. The next test is whether funding remains available through the long journey from technical validation to commercial scale. “How do investors exit?” This is where we still need a longer track record. But the answer depends on which investor—and which kind of company—we are talking about. Early investors can find liquidity through secondaries before a company reaches an IPO. We have facilitated secondary liquidity for our LPs and bought out early investors to increase our own holding. We have experienced both sides. Companies building a critical piece of a larger technology stack can attract strategic buyers. @Infineon’s acquisition of C2i Semiconductors is one example. Companies building toward category leadership may access public markets and use that capital to expand and consolidate. @ankit_ideaForge and @ideaforge_tech have helped establish that possibility for Indian deep tech founders. These paths exist. Now we need more examples, more realised returns and more evidence that they can be repeated. My takeaway: the ecosystem has moved faster than the international perception of it. Founders are building stronger companies. The funding options are expanding. Exit paths are taking shape. As investors, we need to make those proof points visible to global allocators—with tangible outcomes they can underwrite. Thank you to Flavio Melis for moderating, and Ashutosh Tiwari and Krushali Jagiwala for bringing the public-market perspective. The next chapter needs to turn growing conviction into capital.

What happens when frontier technology meets impact capital? That was the question that brought together founders, investors, LPs, co-investors, operators and policymakers around New York during #UNGA and #NewYorkClimateWeek. Hosted by @AavishkaarVC Group and @Ricebergventure , the evening explored what it takes to move breakthrough technologies from possibility to meaningful impact at scale - particularly across the Global South and beyond. We heard from two very different but complementary perspectives. On impact investing, @Raivineet Founder & Vice Chairman of @AavishkaarVC Group, and Audrey Selian, Director at @ArthaImpact , reflected on how impact investing has evolved globally and what it takes to scale capital alongside real-world outcomes. On deep tech, we brought together founders and investors working at the frontier: → @Amar_2407 , Founder & CEO of @SkylarkLabs , on physical AI that continues learning in the real world. → @manu_j_nair , Co-Founder & CEO of @theguildworld on building fully reusable launch infrastructure and what more frequent access to orbit could unlock. → ShubhankarMihirSeth, Co-Founder & CEO of Climitra, on turning biomass-based decarbonisation and permanent carbon removal into scalable infrastructure. → Kiette Tucker, COO of @FactorEVentures , on why innovation is often about adapting existing technologies to the markets and communities where they can create the greatest impact. One theme came through strongly: breakthrough technology alone is not enough. The real challenge is taking something technically ambitious and making it work in the complexity of the real world - across infrastructure, markets, policy, capital and communities. For us at Riceberg, that is where the intersection of deep technology and impact becomes particularly interesting. A big thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversation. The quality of the discussion - and the diversity of perspectives in the room - made this a particularly meaningful evening. Excited to keep building these conversations across the ecosystem. #DeepTech #ImpactInvesting #ClimateTech #FrontierTechnology #VentureCapital #NewYorkClimateWeek #UNGA81 #RicebergVentures #Aavishkaar

Congratulations to the @isaraerospace team on the successful launch. 🚀 We need more of these in Europe. Europe has always had the technical talent, and it also has strong infrastructure to support ambitious moonshots (pun intended). However, what has held Europe back so far is the celebration of dreaming big and taking risks. The Isar team is setting a role model for this. I hope more ambitious founders will emerge from Europe and create an ecosystem where European entrepreneurs don't have to leave to dream big. Of course, we, at @_RicebergVC_, are putting our money where our mouth is. We have invested in European startups like @swisspod and many others. Unlike other global funds, we don't wait to invest until they go to the US. We want to empower founders at home, and we do this globally. We're probably the only early-stage deep tech fund in the world doing this. These achievements of a European startup prove that we are not being naive. Onwards and upwards. 🚀🚀 @Lino_Gandola
We made history. On just our second flight, we became the first commercial space company from Europe to deliver satellites into orbit. Mission 'Onward and Upward' successfully lifted off and deployed payloads into orbit. A new chapter for European spaceflight. More: isaraerospace.com/press/hist…

For 2,000 years, we have used a compass to navigate the world. Since then, we have built maps, sonar, and impressive systems like GPS. But guess what? We still cannot navigate well across more than 70% of the Earth. We tried to improve everything, but nobody ever thought: let’s build a better compass - one that not only gives us direction, but also tells us where we are. The @dirac_labs team, @birdman9550 and @anshu4321, is changing that. They are building a quantum magnetometer for underwater navigation, and I could not be more excited to be a part of opening up this whole new frontier. Let’s go! 🌊🌊
We've raised $1.8M in pre-seed funding to navigate the ocean. A new kind of compass: quantum sensors read Earth's magnetic field; AI turns it into position. The Universal Positioning System.

Indian deep-tech founder need the answer to the question they hear most often: “Why not start with India first?” In his latest piece, @anandvankit, Founding Partner @Ricebergventure , makes a clear case for why deep-tech startups must think global from day one, not year three.Indian buyers are cautious by nature and rarely willing to pay premium prices for unproven technology. That makes them poor early customers for breakthrough innovation. @anandvankit sharpest insight cuts to the core: deep tech shouldn’t be pitched on cost. It should be pitched on trust. A buyer risking a $3 million satellite will always choose reliability over a cheaper unknown.Deferring a global strategy is a trap most founders only recognize when it’s too late. A compelling, clear-eyed read. Give it a read today: lnkd.in/dfVCfU53 #deeptech #startups #venturecapital #innovation #globalbusine

Fusion energy just stopped being “30 years away.” For decades, fusion was the punchline of energy technology — always promising, always distant. That narrative is changing. In 2026, more than $14B has been raised by the fusion industry since 2021, private companies are building increasingly sophisticated hardware, and governments are moving from research funding toward commercialization roadmaps. The physics is no longer the only story. The engineering is now the frontier. Materials. Magnets. Plasma control. Tritium. Heat extraction. Economics. These are extraordinarily hard problems — but they are now being attacked with serious private capital, advanced computing, AI, and a growing industrial ecosystem. This is exactly what deep tech looks like: decades of fundamental science meeting a moment when technology, capital and ambition converge. Here’s what’s actually happening — the milestones, the players, and the hard problems still standing between fusion and commercial power. 🧵 #FusionEnergy #DeepTech #ClimateTech #HardTech #CleanEnergy

Everyone is talking about AI and Space. But are we overlooking the world's largest frontier? The ocean covers over 71% of our planet, yet remains one of humanity's least accessible operating domains. As AI makes intelligence abundant, the next constraints won't just be software—they'll be energy, infrastructure, compute, and physical space. What if the next wave of economic growth isn't built on land or in orbit, but beneath the surface of our oceans? In @anandvankit's latest piece of Article in @htTweets , he explore why the ocean could become the next great platform for innovation, the deep-tech breakthroughs needed to unlock it, and why India is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation. The conversation isn't about extracting more from the ocean—it's about building the technologies that make it observable, connected, autonomous, and sustainable. Would love to hear your thoughts. 🔗 Read the full article: hindustantimes.com/s/1c6H8V6 #DeepTech #OceanTech #BlueEconomy #Innovation #AI #SpaceTech #ClimateTech #India #FutureOfTechnology

Huge congrats to @SkyrootA on successfully reaching orbit last week with Vikram-1! This is an insane milestone for the Indian space ecosystem. It’s the first private space company to reach orbit outside of the US and China. Notable to mention it was their first orbital attempt with ~$160M in total funding, showing crazy execution and capital efficiency. Though it’s not a portfolio company of ours, it confirms that India’s space ecosystem is thriving and our conviction is only growing. That’s why KickSky Space Lab, our spacetech accelerator in India, exists in the first place and with @_RicebergVC_ we’re just as bullish on what’s coming next!
