Hi @MartinSLewis Just to be clear please. Is there anything in the budget today that ultimately helps people who get up and work hard week in week out or is it just for those who don’t bother? If it’s the latter should we all sod it off and start claiming for everything? Thanks

It's actually laughable. The biggest farce of it all is the fact that the personal allowance still sits at 12.5k. The same as it was 7 years ago pre covid when everything is about 50% more expensive since then. They're genuinely just taking the piss out of working people.

Your gherkins & marmalade will be 4p cheaper, shame when you’re sat in the dark you won’t be able to see them!

It doesn't help that so many people treat ambition and well paid roles with contempt.
Like there is something immoral in earning good money and having the audacity not to want the state to compell you to give such a hefty wedge of it away.

Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k
Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years
In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773

Everytime the minimum wage increases, so do the prices to cover.
This means nobody on minimum wage is ever better off, but everyone else is worse off.

Labour are the party who will take £500 extra off you in taxes. Then they will give you £5 back and will want praise for cutting your costs, even though you’re still £495 worse off.
Andy Burnham and John Healey are gaslighting you. Snake oil sales men. Never trust Labour ⚠️

£45 off your energy bill (in 2027) that's going up - on average - by £500 in January.
We are ruled by absolute simpletons.
NEW: Standing charges on gas bills - the fixed daily levy added regardless of how much gas has been used - will be scrapped for around 23m homes, Treasury announces this morning.
John Healey will ask Ofgem to deliver removal of charges in 2027 (or asap after) with fixed costs paid on unit rate instead, which govt says could save 60% of account-holding householders average of £45 off annual bill.
Consumer champion @MartinSLewis, who has campaigned for the move, is currently in No 11 seeing the chancellor.

To add to this:
- A minimum wage job in the UK will now pay £27.4k.
- A PhD graduate will start at ~£35k in their first postdoc.
I can understand why young people think it isn't worth it. UG, MSc, maybe a PhD, for an 8k paybump and a ton of debt lol
