The cashier rang up $61.40, and the woman behind me said, "Oh, I've got this one," like she was picking up a dropped glove.
March 2018. I was 26, three weeks into a job I was about to lose, and I'd been doing grocery math in my head since the parking lot. I had a cart of off-brand everything and a card I was pretty sure would work if I prayed to it.
I turned around. She was maybe 80, in a quilted vest, holding one carton of eggs and a coupon for cat food.
"No, please, it's fine," I said.
"It isn't," she said. "But it will be."
She tapped her card, took her eggs, and walked out before I could get her name. The cashier shrugged. "She does that."
