We are at a Greening Communities event today. Supported by @YVWater @southeastwater @BarwonWater Irrigation Australia and Greater Western Water.
Topic is urban cooling and WSUD maintenance.
Monitoring of permeable pavement. It is about 2 degrees cooler, compared to standard asphalt. At night they are the same temp.
Maintenance frequency is tailored to the asset type and tendency for the assets to clog or accumulate litter.
Huge spatial difference in Greater Melbourne, with rainfall, with socio-economics, with available green space, with daytime air temperatures. West suffers on all of these.
Passively watered trees can absorb between 2% and 70% of available water / runoff. Older trees have higher demand for water.
Total value of carbon from all urban trees in Melbourne is between $30 million and $90 million, depending on what price of carbon you use. And remember we prune them due to overhead power lines.
Now Greg Moore from @UniMelb - bit of a rock star in the world of trees and green infrastructure
Steve talking through research re trees and cooling benefit. Might have over sold the benefit. Model says 1.6 degrees cooler for 10% more canopy. Other empirical study says 0.2 degrees cooler for 10% more canopy.
