We’re diving into the real work of building BSF businesses — not just the opportunity, but the practical realities of scaling.
Fredrick Kimathi, Co-founder and Executive Director of Protein Masters, is walking us through cocreating BSF business models. Through Protein Masters, he focuses on training, consultancy, breeding stock supply, and setting up structures that help others enter and grow in the space.
BSF sits at a powerful intersection:
Blue economy: Reducing demand for omena and other small fish so they stay in the water for bigger fish and healthier aquatic systems.
Green economy: Turning organic waste into protein while producing fertilizer that supports soil regeneration.
Multiple niches exist — larvae production, egg production, consultancy, waste management, and fertilizer production — but scaling them is where many businesses struggle.
Key challenges Kimathi highlights:
BSF is highly capital-intensive
Limited land makes expansion difficult
Consistent waste supply and transportation costs significantly affect viability
Promising scaling pathways being discussed include waste location strategies, hub-and-spoke outgrower models, and stronger policy and standards harmonization.
These are the conversations that turn interest into workable businesses.
If you’re building, investing in, or supporting BSF or circular protein systems, which of these challenges or pathways resonates most with what you’re seeing on the ground?
Share your experience below.

On 21–22 October 2026, @_WingFarm and the @kyasa_ke participated in the 5th International Youth and Land Governance Conference (CIGOFA5), convened by the @youth_yilaa and partners in Nairobi, Kenya.
Held under the theme “Harnessing Technology and Innovation in Securing Youth Land Rights,” the conference explored how technology and innovation can strengthen youth land rights, promote inclusive land governance, and enable young people to participate meaningfully in land management and decision-making.
Representing WingFarm and @kyasa_ke , @kamau_njoroge_ highlighted the need to move beyond securing access to land and ensure that young people have the knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities to manage it sustainably through agroecology.
He called for increased investment in youth-led agroecological enterprises, stronger youth participation in land policy processes, land-use planning and management, and the preservation and intergenerational transfer of Indigenous knowledge. He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding young people from exploitation through the misuse of land data and digital technologies.
Securing youth land rights must go hand in hand with empowering young people to become sustainable stewards of the land. Through agroecology, inclusive land governance, and youth-led innovation, young people can build resilient livelihoods, restore ecosystems, and contribute to more sustainable agrifood systems.

@wingfarm_ was at the 5th Indigenous Seeds Culture and Food Harvest Fair in Kilifi — celebrating the seeds that have fed our communities for generations. 🌱🌽
At Wing Farm, we believe young people are essential to the future of our agricultural systems. It starts with knowing where our food comes from, protecting indigenous seeds, preserving traditional knowledge, and embracing innovations that actually work for our communities.
Youth participation isn’t optional — it’s critical to building a food-secure future. That’s exactly what the @kyasa_ke is about: bringing young people together, amplifying our voices, and strengthening our role in transforming agri-food systems.
Being here means learning from farmers, exchanging ideas, building partnerships, and celebrating the people who continue to safeguard our food heritage.
Let’s keep growing a more sustainable future together.

Yesterday, on 16 October 2026, @_WingFarm joined farmers, innovators, civil society organizations, and other agrifood systems actors at G-BiACK in Thika, to mark World Food Day under the theme 𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔.
The forum provided an opportunity to reflect on how technology, agroecology, and indigenous knowledge can work together to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems.
From preserving indigenous seeds and traditional farming practices to exploring modern technologies that improve productivity, resource efficiency, and market access, one message stood out: 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔’ 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅.
For young people, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. We must champion technologies that create decent livelihoods, protect #biodiversity, strengthen local #food systems, and make safe, nutritious food accessible to all.
At #WingFarm, we believe transforming #foodsystems requires more than technology alone. It calls for meaningful youth participation, investment in locally driven innovation, recognition of #IndigenousKnowledge, and policies that put people and the planet first.

Three days at #AFSS2026 and the message was clear: youth and youth organizations are taking up the idea of an alliance.
Honoured to present on Day 1 as KYASA. Across the summit, young people showed real enthusiasm and innovation in agrifood systems and agribusiness is bright.
Set a reminder for this crucial event that intends to bring the knowledge of indigenous seeds to you and Eastern Africa as a whole.
The theme: Realizing the right to food through seed sovereignty.
