Set on Christmas Eve in Medellín’s lower depths, Víctor Gaviria’s THE ROSE SELLER adapts Hans Christian Andersen in the vernacular of the city’s street children. A luminous culmination of Gaviria’s decades-long work with non-professionals. Tomorrow at Light Industry.

“With LOS HABITANTES DE LA NOCHE, a new Medellín was revealed to us amidst the safety of our homes: the characters in this story spoke like street people, their actions were as swift and tragic as the sidewalks of our adolescence.”

From Víctor Gaviria’s BUSCANDO TRÉBOLES, a visual poem made in collaboration with children from the Medellín School for the Blind. Screens Oct 18 at Light Industry.
The great delight (among many) of organizing this program was being introduced to Gaviria’s The Rose Seller. A film made in the vernacular of Medellín street children. It reconciles the Renoir of The Little March Girl with Los Olvidados and In Vanda’s Room.
