When you cut university language courses, not only are you limiting students’ opportunities, but you’re cutting off connections, narrowing outlooks, denying a wealth of experiences, and making the world smaller. The immeasurable value added by languages far outweighs the cost.

If it weren't for school French and German, I might never have discovered Romanian and Dutch. Spanish nudged me towards Portuguese, Catalan and Italian. Albanian set me up with Farsi and Turkish. Then Fate took me to Mandarin. Languages are journeys with endless destinations.

30 years on, we remember the 16 children and their teacher who lost their lives at Dunblane Primary School, and all those affected by the tragedy.

#WordyWednesday: we’re diving back into German’s amazing one-worders! There’s something special about capturing a fleeting feeling into a single word, and German really does it best. What word mash-up would you create as an English equivalent?

If you’re lucky enough to learn a language at school, take it. It might take you on exchanges to France, Germany and Spain, a year abroad, new voyages. You might interpret Albanian in Kosovo, teach Romanian, work with Farsi & Chinese - and discover a whole new life along the way.
Back for another year. Think this is year 5 but honestly lost count 😂 #MIEETeamScotland

Another busy year in the Firrhill Languages Dept. At the end of term we sadly said goodbye to Mrs Readle after 15 years at FHS & Miss Babar as she moves on to pastures new. However, after summer we say hello to Miss McKirdy @hmmck_edu & Miss McFall! Have a relaxing break all!
3CG 🇩🇪 were playing Capture the Flag today to revise family members, verbs and adjectives today! It was an intense battle…. The winners will be revealed in class next week 👀

Learning a language changed everything for me. It didn’t just open doors; it rewired how I think, learn and connect. History spoke louder. Science made more sense. Art hit deeper. Languages don’t sit in a box; they weave through every subject you learn. albarolanguages.com/2025/06/…

Languages aren’t just something you learn in school - they’re a new way of seeing the world. They connect subjects, demystify cultures, and shape how you think in everything from history to science, art to computing, music to maths. Learn a language, and you gain a tool for life.

S3 LFLW Italian were learning about all the different pasta shapes. They even got a chance to make some using play-doh and find out their names in Italian 🇮🇹 🍝 (thank you to @MissIrwin_ML for the inspo!)
